The CART Life Science teacher will develop and deliver a hands-on, integrated curriculum that provides students with opportunities for real-world application of science while exploring animal phylums. The core Environmental Science content is focused on ecosystem diversity, function, and sustainability. The Environmental Science class aligns to the Forestry and Natural Resources Pathway within the Agriculture and Natural Resources Industry Sector within the Career Technical Education (CTE) program. The program also offers students Unitrack enrollment at California State University, Fresno to earn 4 Environmental Science credits.
The Life Science curriculum supports the environmental science concepts through focusing upon zoology content. Curriculum provides students with training, skills, and experience in zoology methods, such as dissections, while making observations and connections to terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
Teachers in the CART Environmental Science Lab (Physical Science, Life Science, and English) are a part of a team of instructors that plan together, teach together, and collaborate with one another on a daily basis. The long-running mission of the CART Environmental Science program is to plan and implement an authentic curriculum that integrates English, Zoology, and Environmental Science content and skills through a project-based setting, with a focus on real-world research and use of industry technology. Students work in collaborative teams to complete two to three in-depth research projects each year. CART hosts two public showcases each year for which students share their learning through a variety of creative and dynamic presentations. Students are also given the opportunity to explore their own career and college aspirations, develop their own resumes and cover letters, and take part in interviews with professional mentors with the goal of acquiring a position on a project team of their choice.
The teacher will partner with and maintain a network of professional community partners. These partners act as program advisors and lead students in science-based field projects. These projects provide students with training and skills-based work experiences related to careers in environmental science. All lab teachers take an active role in facilitating and participating in projects and field days to various research sites in the Central California region.
