Job Title: Shelter Veterinarian
Reports to: Medical Supervisor
JOB DESCRIPTION: Friendship Animal Protective League is looking for a veterinarian to join our experienced team, which includes two RVTs, and a surgery assistant. The Shelter Veterinarian, reporting to the Medical Supervisor, plays a crucial role in ensuring the health and well-being of animals within the shelter environment. This position involves a combination of clinical and administrative responsibilities to provide comprehensive veterinary care for shelter animals, maintain a healthy and sanitary living environment, and contribute to the overall success of the shelter's mission. The veterinarian will be responsible for the daily care of all surgical patients in a high-volume spay & neuter clinic (over 30 surgeries per day), and other simple/routine surgeries as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
● Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited institution.
● Must be a licensed Veterinarian in the State of Ohio and Veterinary license must be in good standing with the Ohio State Veterinary Board.
● Must maintain all current and correct licensure.
● Experience in a shelter or high-volume spay/neuter clinic preferred.
● Strong surgical skills, especially in spaying and neutering.
● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
● Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
● Commitment to animal welfare and the mission of the shelter.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical Care:
● Conduct thorough physical examinations and medical assessments of incoming animals. Examine animals pre-operatively to determine their ability to withstand surgery.
● Assess individual patient issues, and develop and implement treatment plans for sick or injured animals. Make reasonable and sensible medical decisions.
● Perform surgical procedures, including spaying and neutering (over 30 surgeries per day), in accordance with shelter protocols and best veterinary practices. Perform other simple/routine surgeries as needed.
● Administer vaccinations, medications, and other necessary treatments as appropriate.
● Respond promptly to medical emergencies and provide critical care as needed.
Diagnostics and Record-Keeping:
● Utilize diagnostic tools, such as laboratory tests, to aid in accurate diagnoses.
● Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records for all shelter animals.
● Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements related to veterinary care and record-keeping.
Collaboration and Communication:
● Collaborate with the Medical Supervisor and other veterinary staff to establish and uphold medical, surgical and disease-control protocols.
● Communicate effectively with shelter staff, volunteers, and external partners regarding animal health and medical procedures.
● Provide guidance and support to animal care staff on health-related issues.
● Communicate any issues concerning training programs and/or participants to Medical Supervisor.
Training and Education:
● Stay informed about current veterinary practices and participate in ongoing continued education and professional development.
Facility Maintenance:
● Contribute to maintaining a clean and sanitary environment within the shelter.
● Collaborate with facility management to address any environmental factors that may affect animal health.
Compliance and Regulations:
● Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to veterinary care and animal welfare.
● Stay informed about changes in relevant laws and regulations and implement necessary adjustments.
OTHER:
● Creatively problem-solve on a daily basis.
● Behave in a manner that upholds both personal and professional standards, as an ambassador of the Friendship Animal Protective League, at all times.
● Be a leader among staff, displaying a positive attitude and acting as a motivating force for all staff members.
● Strive to continually improve all training programs
● All other duties, as assigned
WORKING CONDITIONS:
● The position may involve exposure to animal allergens, zoonotic diseases, and a variety of environmental conditions.
● Flexibility with work hours, including evenings and weekends, may be required during emergencies.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
● Must be able to work standing for 8 or more hours
● Must possess excellent hand-eye coordination
● Must possess an acceptable degree of dexterity in hands and fingers
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $55-$65 per hour
Expected hours: 32 – 40 per week
