About Us:

The Future of Privacy Forum (FPF) is a non-profit organization that serves as a catalyst for privacy leadership and scholarship, advancing principled data practices in support of emerging technologies. The Youth & Education Privacy team advises policymakers, academics, companies, districts, and states on child and student privacy law and best practices; oversees the education privacy resource center website, Student Privacy Compass, and the review of applicants to the Student Privacy Pledge; and convenes stakeholders to ensure the responsible use of student data and education technology in schools.

General Overview:

FPF is seeking to hire a Director to lead its work on emerging questions of privacy and data protection related to youth and student privacy. Key responsibilities for the position include: working with the SVP for Policy to refine the strategic vision for FPF’s youth & education portfolio; managing a diverse team of legal, policy, and technical experts who undertake independent research, analysis, and writing regarding key issues related to youth and student privacy; acting as the leading expert voice on youth and student privacy issues within FPF and externally; leading outreach and collaboration with interested FPF stakeholders, interest groups, civil society, foundation partners, relevant government agencies, academics, and other key partners; organizing events and meetings with stakeholders, both in-person and virtual; and working with FPF’s development team regarding current foundation grants and future projecting funding opportunities.

This is a full-time position located in Washington, D.C. FPF staff are currently working remotely, with the option to work in-office as preferred, in accordance with building and organization COVID-19 safety regulations. We expect D.C.-based staff to return to the office part-time in spring 2022.

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic planning for FPF’s youth & education data goals and strategies.

  • Legal and policy analysis and development of recommendations related to emerging issues in student privacy, as well as regulatory consideration of questions of data protection concerning children.
  • Analysis of how uses of data will impact vulnerable communities
  • Outreach and collaboration with FPF stakeholders, as well as with key interest groups, relevant government agencies, academics, and other partners
  • Research and writing on emerging issues related to privacy and technology; drafting filings for regulatory proposals, drafting white papers or other academic papers as assigned
  • Provide commentary through blog posts, media interviews, and representation at public panel presentations and events

Required Qualifications:

  • J.D. or Masters's degree in a related field

  • Significant management experience
  • 6-10 years experience in relevant legal, policy, or technical positions
  • Familiarity with related U.S. and European legislative and regulatory privacy laws
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Interest in emerging trends in technology and implications for users and society
  • Demonstrated project planning and organizational skills

Salary Range: $140,000-$170,000
