Sports–Copy Editors – The Center for Community Journalism, part of the USA TODAY Network, is seeking two part-time, temporary, remote copy editors to help handle copy from across the country on Friday nights and Saturdays during the 2023 football season.These positions are for two eight-hour work-from-home shifts – one on Friday nights and one on Saturdays – until mid-December. Candidates must be available every week through the term of the season. Copy editors will edit copy for spelling and grammar, write or massage headlines in accordance with our CEO strategies, make sure stories have all necessary assets including galleries and/or video, and make copy print-ready.
The ideal candidate will have professional experience as a sports editor or copy editor. Candidates must be able and ready to work at a brisk pace throughout all shifts.
Proficiency in Presto or WordPress is preferred. Experience editing copy on deadline is a must.
These positions do not provide insurance or other benefits.
The successful candidate will need to:
Possess strong copy-editing and fact-checking skills.
Display excellent news judgment and journalism ethics.
Adhere to AP style guidelines in editing copy.
Be able to work in fast-paced environment, turning from one task to the next quickly as copy is filed.
Work effectively with editors, peers, strategists and other colleagues across the company.
Have a knack for SEO-driven headlines and other audience-driving strategies.
Requirements:
College degree or equivalent work experience in local news.
1-3 years of reporting experience, preferably with digital focus.
Commitment to detail, accuracy and fairness.
Command of grammar, AP style, media law and SPJ Code of Ethics.
Ability to multi-task and excel under deadline pressure, using time efficiently.
Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment, post-offer background check.
