Public Safety Reporter
The Battle Creek Enquirer/battlecreekenquirer.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK is seeking a full-time reporter to join the team.
The reporter will cover breaking news involving crime and public safety in Battle Creek and Calhoun County, including the courts. Familiarity with Michigan’s court system is a plus and the reporter must be organized and able to track court coverage. Occasional coverage of civil lawsuits is included.
The reporter will take care to uphold our public safety reporting standards, striving to provide balance, making sure to provide needed context and to include community voices in our coverage. All of our reporters are encouraged to look beyond daily news for enterprising articles on topics that impact the community and to produce unique, revelatory journalism that helps grow our digital subscriber base.
Responsibilities:
Provide coverage of breaking news and thoughtful coverage of related issues.
Produce occasional watchdog journalism.
Produce articles that meet audience needs and interests on multiple platforms.
Act as a public ambassador through community outreach and connect with readers through social media.
Creates stories that accurately inform and engage audiences.
Connects with the community through outreach and social media.
Works with editor to evaluate metrics, what’s working and what’s not and develop ongoing plans to satisfy audience needs.
Collaborates with photographer and other reporters as necessary.
Takes basic photos and/or video when needed.
Promotes personal brand, the brands of colleagues and the institutional brand.
Performs other duties as necessary.
This job includes some evening and weekend work.
Requirements:
Bachelor's or master’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
1 to 3 years of related work experience; recent graduates will be considered.
Basic photography and videography
Understanding of social media and how to engage
Audience on digital platforms.
Ability to research, report and write news articles for publication.
Understanding of standards and ethics around news gathering.
Ability to competently execute primary forms of news gathering, including source interviews, use of public records, data analysis and primary and secondary source research.
Ability to write news articles on deadline with little guidance and basic enterprise with routine guidance from editors.
Ability to multi-task and use time efficiently.
This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
Pre-employment background check and urinalysis drug screen required.
