GENERAL SUMMARY
This position of Product Engineer is responsible for the control and execution of engineering activities for development of new products, as well as improvement of existing products resolving issues and ensuring the product meets safety and quality expectations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic and Functional
- Supports planning and implementation of new product development projects. Coordinates activities with other team members and suppliers from initial concept development to successful completion and industrialization.
- Develops cost-effective concepts and final design of components and assemblies required for completion of new product projects. Documents design and specifications to ensure new products achieve cost, quality, reliability and performance expectations as established by the project team.
- Develops cost estimates to monitor current costs against initial estimates to ensure the new product is profitable to produce.
- Maintain the integrity and accessibility of existing design and production documents, such as bills-of-material, routings, drawings, item master information, and cost information.
- Works closely with Purchasing, Production and Drafting to specify the necessary quality, dimensions, and technical characteristics of purchased and manufactured items.
- Assists with testing and evaluation to ensure product reliability and performance achieves expectations.
- Develops operating instructions and warning decals. Also supports development of jigs and special tools needed for products in the transition from design to production.
- Application of sound engineering principles and time management techniques in the execution of all activities. Keeps informed of the latest developments and trends in the engineering field.
- Participates in project planning to achieve overall objectives at lowest overall cost. Participates in committee meetings on an as needed basis.
- Assist Director of Engineering or Project Leader in establishing proposals, cost estimates, progress updates and timely resolution of project issues.
Requirements
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
- Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university
- 5-7 years design engineering experience working in the metals industry applying engineering principles in a manufacturing environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Working knowledge of CAD systems
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
- Possess the ability to apply appropriate mathematical concepts with respect to standard engineering functions and practices including the ability to identify the nature and magnitude of loads and stresses a product will endure under foreseeable application scenarios and execute mathematical operations to analyze and validate a products’ ability to perform as intended
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
- Position is required to work in the office as well as the shop and occasionally visits job sites.
