General Position Summary:
Lead Industrial Technician to provide leadership to a group of mechanics to ensure that all repairs and maintenance of equipment are performed in compliance with Garten safety and reliability standards and are applicable to Bulk Handling Systems factory repair, maintenance and labor guidelines.
Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:
- Responsible for monitoring and maintaining the operation of all facility systems and equipment.
- Including but not limited to balers, conveyor belts, gearboxes, electrical motors, pulleys, shafts and bearings.
- Responds to all system failures by taking appropriate corrective action by completing or assigning the repairs needed to ensure that systems are operational and are functioning safely and efficiently.
- Responsible for taking after hour calls and dispatching mechanics accordingly.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position supervises the work of maintenance assistant(s).
Interpersonal Contacts:
Has both internal and external contacts. The most common internal contacts are with other departments or locations. The most frequent external contacts are with outside vendors/contractors, inspectors, and/or state and local government officials. The types of interactions, for both internal and external contacts, involve information exchange and problem solving.
Both internal and external contacts are usually made at the employee's own initiative with 30% of the contacts being over the phone and 70% face to face.
Specific Job Responsibilities:
- Performs repairs in accordance with Garten Management Safety and Life Critical Rules and OSHA. (Occupational and Safety Health Act) requirements.
- Performs preventive maintenance inspection (PM); diagnose, repair, and rebuild major equipment/components including but not limited to balers, conveyors, hydraulic power packs, eddy currents, electro-magnetic belts, diverters, compressors, shredders, motors, glass breakers, wire tie systems, fans, pumps, etc.… .
- Maintains DEI (Daily Equipment Inspections).
- Establishes and adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules and advises Maintenance Manager if additional work is needed, or cannot be completed within the Standard Repair Times (SRTs).
- Inspects the quality of third party repairs and or rebuilds.
- Recommends measures to improve production, equipment performance and product quality
- Ability to multi-task and manage multiple priorities.
- Performs service calls for emergency breakdowns.
- Ability to perform under limited supervision.
- Requires a flexible work schedule, which may include nights and weekends to support operating schedule and the needs of the facility.
- Maintains a clean, safe work area in compliance with Corporate/OSHA Standards, and performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
Specific Job Skills Required:
- Verifiable skills in welding, fabricating, hydraulics, maintenance and troubleshooting on Vehicles, equipment, and machinery.
- Must be able to operate vehicles, equipment, and machinery.
- Must be able to set priorities and use judgment for knowing when to contact the supervisor for help in making decisions beyond own capability or authority.
- Ability to accept direct and specific instruction/direction from supervisors.
- Ability to plan and complete projects in a timely manner.
- Ability to maintain accurate records/logs.
- Physical ability to push/pull up to 1000 pounds with pallet jack occasionally in a normal workday.
- Physical ability to lift/carry up to 75 pounds occasionally in a normal workday.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, twist, reach, grasp, handle, and use general hand and power tools.
- Must have excellent communication skills.
- Ability to work closely and cohesively with other employees.
- Ability to speak, understand, read and write English.

- Valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, and proof of current vehicle insurance.
- Ability to obtain and maintain forklift and loader certification.
Education and/or Experience Required:
- A minimum of 2-3 years on-the-job mechanical experience/training, with some vocational training and/or higher education preferred.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
- Millwright / LME License
- Certification / Advance Hydraulic Training
- Valid driver's license, Class A or B preferred
- OEM training and/or certification
Job Conditions:
This position requires the incumbent to work in an environment where there may be exposure to: building temperature fluctuations; odors; dirt; dust; fumes; heavy equipment operation; outdoor weather; noise; biohazards; frequently working in poorly ventilated and poorly lighted areas. Other working conditions may include: Frequent interruptions; working alone; on-call status; occasional heavy equipment operation; extensive detail work; exposure to a computer CRT; pressure of meeting deadlines. Unscheduled overtime may be required.
