SUMMARY

Open Until Filled-

The Captain of Campus Police performs a variety of administrative, supervisory, and professional campus safety and security duties including planning, coordinating, and directing operational activities of the Campus Police and Security Department.

This position assists and works under the guidance and direction of the Chief of Campus Police and assumes command of the Campus Police Department in the absence of the Chief of Campus Police.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organizes and directs the work of the Lieutenant of Campus Police.
  • In collaboration with the Lieutenant of Campus of Police, supervises and schedules the daily operations of the Campus Police and Security Department including patrols, law enforcement, incident and traffic management, investigations, communications, and support services.
  • Provides coaching and mentoring and is responsible for performance management and performance appraisals.
  • Delegates appropriate responsibilities for planning, organizing, and directing department personnel.
  • Enforces Federal and State statutes and College policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Schedules and / or conducts patrols for the campuses and other areas under the College’s purview (e.g., Center for Advanced Manufacturing or CAM), to ensure the safety and security of students, employees, members of the general public, buildings, and grounds.
  • Manages the daily operations of the Communications function within the department including the switchboard, dispatching, emergency notification (GCALERT), and the PA and surveillance systems.
  • Schedules and directs security for College events as needed.
  • Responds to requests for assistance and emergencies.
  • Supervises criminal and other investigations, including follow-up, and reviews reports for accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Reviews incident / accident reports for accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Handles potential or actual difficult situations with a calm, empathetic, and controlled response to prevent escalation or to de-escalate the situation.
  • Works closely with the College’s EHS function and collaborates on the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and activities to prevent or manage EHS-related matters.
  • Recommends and implements new department programs.
  • Manages and regulates traffic, parking, and related incidents.
  • Manages Campus Police and Security support services (e.g., DCI, ID Services, Records Unit, Locksmith Services, Parking Permits, Property / Evidence, and Lost-and-Found).
  • Assists in the review, update, and / or completion of various Campus Police and Security-related reports and documents such as the Emergency Response Guide (ERG), Annual Security Report (ASR), and Clery Act reporting.
  • Assists with the development and revision of Campus Police and Security Department policies, procedures, and manuals.
  • Serves on the College C.A.R.E. Team and other committees as needed or when requested.
  • Participates in court and related internal or external hearings as needed.
  • Represents department in campus, local, and related meetings as requested, and builds strong relationships with community and external law enforcement.
  • Leads, coordinates, and / or assists with emergency operations planning activities including training, table top exercises, and drills for the College and collaborates with external public safety agencies (e.

g., Law Enforcement, Fire, EMS, etc.).

  • Meets regularly with department personnel to share information, provide necessary training, and maintain a team-oriented approach and cohesiveness.
  • Works closely with the Professional Development function to identify, schedule, and maintain required and additional training and certifications for department personnel.
  • Proactively, and as requested, meets with College personnel, departments, and groups to provide education and training on emergency preparedness and response.
  • Campus Police and Security personnel are expected to protect lives and safeguard property while observing established policies, procedures, guidelines, and the law;
  • demonstrate professionalism at all times in serving the College and community; communicate with others with respect and courtesy;
  • maintain objectivity in the handling of situations; maintain confidentiality, as appropriate, in the performance of the duties and responsibilities of the position;
  • adhere to high ethical standards at all times; accept professional accountability for performance; work cooperatively with team members, members of the College Community, and members of the public to maintain strong and effective working relationships and partnerships;

contribute positively and constructively to team and College goals and objectives; and provide a high level of customer service at all times.

  • Coordinates special projects as assigned internal / external to department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate degree (or higher) from a regionally accredited institution in criminal justice or a related field required.
  • North Carolina Law Enforcement Officer Certification required.
  • Completion of North Carolina BLET required.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of five years of law enforcement experience required.
  • At least two years of supervisory experience required.
  • Clean criminal history, valid driver’s license with no DUI convictions, and fingerprinting upon hire required.
  • College / university law enforcement experience preferred.
  • Must have the ability to comprehend and carry out directives and analyze situations quickly and determine proper course of action.
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws required.
  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to create and present safety and security-related information to small and large groups.
  • Strong interpersonal, listening, and customer services skills required.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite programs preferred.
  • Position sometimes requires work beyond scheduled hours, including days, nights, and weekends.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Moderate physical labor may be required on occasion.
  • Working outside in adverse weather conditions is common.
  • Must be able to lift and maneuver items weighing up to 30 pounds, to walk up and down stairs, and to walk for extended periods.
  • Must be able to work variable hours at multiple campuses, including weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts.
  • Work environment can be stressful at times in dealing with a wide variety of challenges and deadlines.
