Purpose Statement
Gaston School District is currently accepting applications for an Instructional Assistant position. The grade level this position will be working with, is yet to be determined. This position requires the ability to work with specific students either in a one on one setting, or in small groups. Both in the general classroom setting, or outside of the classroom for individualized instruction.
The job of the Instructional Assistant is for the purpose of administering direct assistance to identified students and working to meet the educational needs of students. The Instructional Assistant will work under the direction of a licensed classroom teacher while performing a wide variety of duties that can include assisting the teacher in planning and preparing for classroom activities, working one-on-one with students, or in a group setting.
Essential Functions
- Under supervision, perform a wide variety of duties assisting the teacher in an instructional setting.
- Under supervision of a certified teacher, plan and prepare for classroom activities.
- Work with students to meet their educational and language needs by using curriculum, appropriate strategies, methods, and materials and/or equipment as directed by the teacher.
- Check student work, correct papers, and supervise testing.
- Perform clerical duties as requested.
- Assist the teacher with non-instructional classroom duties such as student supervision.
- Participate in inservice training programs as requested.
- Provide tutorial help to students as requested.
- Ability to effectively operate various computer software programs.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision supporting records management.
- May assist with student mobility such as lifting, transferring, and transporting.
Other Functions
Provide assistance to other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
Job Requirements – Minimum Qualifications
Perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: administering first aid; operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
Knowledge - perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percent, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents using correct grammar and punctuation, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: appropriate codes, regulations and laws related to the job functions.
Ability - schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; collate data; and use basic job related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize specific, job related equipment. In working with others, independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: maintaining confidentiality; communicating with persons of varied backgrounds; and being attentive to detail.
Responsibilities:
- Work under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods.
- Lead, guide, and/or coordinate students under direction of classroom teacher.
- The Instructional Assistant shall work and communicate effectively with students, parents, and school personnel.
- The Instructional Assistant shall hold a valid academic high school diploma or equivalency.
- A minimum of two years of post high school education OR a passing score on a district administered assessment that demonstrates knowledge and the ability to assist instructing students in reading, writing, and mathematics.
- Maintain current Frist Aid/CPR certification and implement medical protocols as needed.
- Training or experience in working with youth is preferred.
- The ability to work harmoniously with others.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 60% standing, 30% sitting, and 10% walking. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, some hazardous conditions, and in a clean atmosphere.
Experience – Job related experience is preferred.
Required Testing – Job related proficiency test is required such as WorkKeys or Associates Degree.
Certificates & Licenses - CPR/First Aid Certificate, or the ability to obtain within 60 days.
Education – At least a high school diploma. Associates Degree preferred.

Compensation:
Salary and benefits are paid in accordance with the classified negotiated agreement. Classified Salary Schedule - Instructional Assistant. $16.01 to $19.91 per hour depending on experience.
