The Staff Accountant is responsible for:
- Reviews and analyzes financial statements for assigned operating units, or assigned accounts or recurring entries. Performs calculations and verifications of accounting information, prepares journal entries, and makes general ledger corrections.
- Reconciles various transactions and accounts such as prepaid accounts, liability accounts, bank statements, fixed asset purchase, corrections to accounts receivable or accounts payable, and so forth.
- Closes accounting period for assigned operating units and accounts by ensuring all account activity is recorded and corrections are made, verifying and completing adjustments as needed, and preparing closing entries and instructions.
- Provides accounting expertise and financial administration advice to assigned operating units in interpreting and analyzing financial statements, , and making corrections and adjustments to revenues and expenses. Prepares various financial analyses and summary reports for assigned operating units as requested.
- Compiles data from various source documents, and performs calculations and spreadsheet analyses to complete various recurring and special reports related to financial status of individual units, budgets, expenses, , balance sheet summaries, and so forth.
- Analyzes and interprets contracts and funding source requirements for accounting or financial reporting compliance, prepares required account and records, and completes necessary reports.
- Works on various special projects and assignments, as an individual or team member, such as reviewing and recommending changes to accounting procedures, investigating and correcting identifiable errors in assets, refining distribution methodology and updating distribution tables, preparing audit work papers, and so forth.
- Evaluates and develops accounting procedures for various tasks to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and accepted accounting principles, and so forth.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or closely related field.
- 1-3 years of accounting experience required to gain expertise and understanding necessary to analyze and maintain assigned accounts.
- Knowledge of accounting principles, theories and systems; and ability to analyze and balance accounts, maintain ledgers and journals, and prepare related statements and reports.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively with various personnel in the collection and analysis of financial data.
- Advanced analytical abilities and high level of attention to detail necessary to collect, analyze, verify and make appropriate changes to accounting records; and perform involved and comprehensive analyses to prepare financial statements and reports.
- Demonstrated knowledge of database and spreadsheet applications and ability to complete data entry accurately and efficiently.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to communicate with others in order to gather and exchange information
- Ability to respond to telephone inquires
- Ability to continually proofread, and check and verify data and calculations of detailed statements and account records from printed form and computer monitor display.
- Ability to use a keyboard and video display terminal to enter, retrieve, and/or audit information and data on a continual basis
