Job Description Summary

The GSI Engineering Leader has full global responsibility for engineering execution excellence. They define standard work methodologies and procedures driving to on time delivery, margin improvement and cash, working through safety by design, quality/ completeness, and proper execution rigor across the organisation. They are responsible to develop the engineering competencies and culture within the GSI organisation.

Job Description

Key missions of the GSI Engineering Leader:

Engineering strategy

  • Improve the project engineering function at Inquiry to Order (ITO) phase and make it accountable for engineering budget and technical solution proposed, as well as the engagement of Order to Remittance (OTR) team for a smooth transition to OTR.
  • Drive the operating mechanism in all the GSI engineering community globally, setting rhythm, interaction, and collaboration for optimized execution of deliverables, integrate all operating activities, being instrumental in improving efficiency and execution to meet customer and business commitments
  • Define the ‘Make or Buy’ strategy for engineering activities globally and implement within the regions with the support of the Region Engineering Leaders.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with required external and internal stakeholders to ensure that customer requirements are understood and are being achieved.
  • Identify and launch key initiatives to address performance issues, breakthrough improvement ideas, improve core competencies and other relevant areas of focus.

Management of engineering offices

  • Directly manage the GSI Center of Excellence (CoE) to ensure capabilities and capacity is developed to support the wider GSI community.  Defining operational KPI’s to continue CoE profitable growth.
  • In partnership with the CoE Leader, create development and growth opportunities across Business Lines within GE Vernova.
  • Lead the Project Engineering Office (PEO) to manage and regularly update the Engineering Management Handbook (EMH), Engineering processes, training, tools, as well as growing engineering expertise through competency management and the Technical Experts Program (TEP).
  • Set operational targets, operating rhythms to ensure consistency in engineering approach and delivery across GSI Regions, our CoE and Product Delivery Groups (PDG).

Engineering process and tools

  • Responsible for development and deployment of engineering tools and to drive engineering quality process and metrics.
  • Deploy GRID engineering tools and process, including collaboration across Business Lines for successful project execution (use of EMH, including updates with Return of Experience), Building Information Modelling (BIM), System Engineering approach (Cmmi) etc.).
  • Secure with the support of IT function the adequacy between Engineering tools and IT infrastructure
  • Ensure knowledge capitalization through return of experience, toward sales, tendering team and Project Engineering

Product Management

  • Lead development and cost reduction of GSI reference / baseline solutions and project delivery to reduce tendering and execution risks, time and costs to be more predictable and consistent in execution.
  • Interact with customers to understand current and future business and product needs and translate customer feedback into market trends as input to NPI roadmap.
  • Communicate core business vision & strategy to grow & manage product portfolio and ensure competitive position & product vitality.
  • Develop & optimize key supply chain relationships. Understand and implement cost management strategies.

People management, Training & Development

  • Lead and manage the competency assessment of the engineering community to ensure we have the appropriate skills and expertise to develop our technical solutions and delivery to our customers.  Using appropriate tools, and more specifically the Engineering Region Leaders, Engineering CoE Leader and Engineering PDG leaders to ensure performance standards, annual objectives, policies and procedures are met and to give coherent objectives across all engineering categories
  • Organize and energize engineering community across GSI with regular communication
  • Ensure the teams have the right level of know-how and competency to perform their responsibilities through coaching and development.
  • Regularly manage and review performance of Engineering leadership teams according to GE practices.
  • Champion the Technical Expert Program and other associated initiatives that allow clear career path and development opportunities for the engineering community.

Quality & Lean

  • Comply with quality procedures, work instructions and processes at Grid solutions level and Project Engineering function
  • Report or resolve any non-conformances to process in a timely manner
  • Identify areas of opportunity for standardization / optimization and nominate a team to undertake a Kaizen or similar lean event to implement any identified improvements
  • Support the launch of investigation to understand when a KPI or process is veering off course and use the data to evaluate the situation and take appropriate mitigation steps.

Environment, Health and Safety (including Safety by Design).

  • Set the process and governance around Implementation of design freeze and EHS in design
  • Demonstrate EHS leadership and ensure Zero Deviation Plan and our Safety Footprint Program is implemented within the team
  • Takes responsibility to reward and encourage direct reports to take proactive steps toward all matters related to EHS in the workplace.
  • Sets the example by demonstrating the proper acts and actively observes work conditions and behaviours, giving constructive feedback and celebrating EHS effective prevention.
  • Actively participates in defining corrective actions when work is unsafe or when an uncontrolled risk is observed.

Performance Measurement

  • Safety leadership and performance
  • Zero safety deviations, no safety non-conformances
  • Development of key talents, in both leadership and technical depth, & Yearly skills improvement plan, with clearly defined career paths for the engineering community.
  • Evidence of regular engineering team information/exchange meeting
  • Ensure engineering budgets followed on regular basis (as per finance requirement), monitor region, CoE and PDG anticipation and analysis of potential Budget deviation (Increase or decrease) across all, supporting more proactive management of risks and opportunities.
  • Define operational KPI’s to be flowed down throughout the engineering organization, including monitoring of monthly reporting and progress of associated action plans.

Desired Profile & Experience

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from a recognised university.
  • 15 years of Engineering or Project Management activities in EPC type environment in T&D, Power Gen or Oil &Gas industry
  • Successful experience in management of engineering, technology, or project management teams
  • Strong influencing and relationship building skills
  • Knowledge of project execution risks and financial processes
  • Willingness to work in different locations for short or medium period, as well as regular travel to customer offices, manufacturing facilities and project construction sites.
  • Demonstrated presentation skills and ability to succinctly communicate complex messages
  • Demonstrated ability to lead in an unstructured environment and deliver results
  • Demonstrates ownership & accountability, judgment and decision making, influences & inspires team, creates a vision and strategy, and has passion for the role
  • Global experience and mindset including high technical cultural competence and sensitivity
  • Mastering of some engineering processes such as: Civil work, Plant configuration, control & protection hardware, System & performance studies, or Electrical design would be an advantage but not essential
