What are the responsibilities and job description for the Power Equipment Operator position at Gelco Construction?
The Excavator Operator is a skilled tradesman position in our Civil Division.
Summary
The Operator operates a variety of equipment and trucks used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities, but must have experience with track excavators. The Operator also performs a variety of semiskilled tasks in the construction and maintenance of street, sewer, and storm drainage systems.
Essential Functions

- Operates trucks and construction or power equipment, such as mechanized broom, backhoes, compactors, dozers, excavators, loaders, and skid steers.
- Clears construction areas of debris and other hazardous materials prior to beginning a project.
- Builds levels and excavates land surfaces using a variety of construction equipment.
- Works with and assists the line crew in digging ditches and trenches, hoisting material, tools, equipment, and any related work with a backhoe, compactor, grader, excavator, or loader.
- Performs routine inspections to ensure equipment is safe to operate; refers defects or repairs to the supervisor.
- Assists in the installing and maintenance of temporary and permanent traffic control devices.
- Takes orders from supervisor for daily work tasks and provides feedback to supervisor on a daily basis.
- Ensures that work reports are completed at the end of each day and turned in to the supervisor.
- Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate and up to date safety and security standards.
- All other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervision responsibilities.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts, and is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risks of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and smell.
The employee must frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position that is eligible for overtime. Standard days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Overtime is paid on any hours worked over 40 in a week.
Travel
Local travel to various worksites is required.
Required Education and Experience
Minimum two (2) years’ experience operating heavy equipment including, but not limited to: Excavators, Compactors, Dozers, Graders, Loaders, and Skid Steers. One (1) year of which must have been related to utility or street systems.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
Valid Driver’s License required (Class A not required but is a plus) – You will need to provide a copy of your
Driving Record from the DMV.
Pre-Employment Drug Screen and Physical Exam – must be medically qualified for position.
Compensation
Wages start at $20/hour and go up to $35/hour, depending on experience.
Benefits
Health Insurance – 60 day waiting period, employer pays 75%, employee pays 25%
Profit Sharing – Gelco contributes 5% of the employee’s gross wages into a managed fund on a quarterly basis
401k – 90 day waiting period, employees can contribute 1% - 15% of their gross wages and Gelco will match their contribution $0.25 for every $1.00.
