PHC Strategy Director

Genentech
South San Francisco, CA Full Time

What are the responsibilities and job description for the PHC Strategy Director position at Genentech?

The Position

Today only a fraction of humanity receives the best healthcare. There are many reasons why effective and efficient healthcare may not be available to all, why the latest innovations are not widely adopted and integrated into care, and why tailored care plans are not always accessible. But one thing is certain: humanity deserves better. The focus needs to broaden - from treating disease to delivering truly patient-centered healthcare.

At Roche, personalized healthcare (PHC) means better health, at a lower cost, for people and society. It means shifting from a one-size-fits-all approach to the best care for each person. The convergence of pioneering science, data, analytics and technology—existing and new—is central to this vision. When data becomes insights, systems learn. The care experience and health outcomes improve. People benefit.

About this position

The Pharma PHC organization plays a critical role in realizing Roche’s PHC ambitions. This organization’s purpose is to provide patients and health-care professionals with beyond-molecule PHC solutions that produce additional benefits at less cost to society.

The PHC Strategy team establishes and guides the PHC and Pharma organizations toward a clear line of sight based on external landscape and broad Roche TA/DA strategies. Strategy is fundamentally about choice, and this team ensures that choices are being made and lived out across the organization with focus and rhythm. In a nutshell, PHC Strategy helps orient and optimize activities of PHC and its collaborators to achieve the most benefit for patients and health systems.

The Strategy Director within the PHC Strategy group plays a pivotal role in helping to achieve this ambition. Drawing upon significant internal Roche experience and strategic acumen, he/she will contribute to the next evolution of our response to external/market factors, defining and leading programs that set PHC up for success.

This is a critical actor who drives the need-finding, response and prioritization process with the PHC DA strategy lead and their partners (franchise heads, LCLs, DADs, and ISLs)

They ensure deep partnership is formed via understanding of other strategy groups and leaders within the company (e.g Corporate, DIA, REDs, etc), and operate fluently and seamlessly across geographies and silos.  They connect the dots beyond Pharma and across Roche to help pin-point potential collaborations which are more tractable to PHC solutions.

Core Responsibilities

Contribute to global and inter-/cross-disciplinary teams for critical projects. Holds a key piece of the PHC strategy portfolio and/or funnel at any moment in time, while also serving as a thought partner and collaborator to PHC LT & functions, strategy peers, and DA stakeholders.

Co-design and operate components of the PHC management systems (early stage digital health innovation, impact measurement, structure & governance, etc.) to ensure the best use of resources against PHC opportunities over the 3-5 year timeline.

Contribute to decision-making and scoping forums with PHC teams and disease/franchise heads, and liaise between PHC Pharma and DA decision makers as appropriate. The Strategy Lead is also accountable for iterating and evolving the key components beyond MVP status as we gather more insight and evidence as to what works.

Define and hold perspective on external landscapes and product development best practices as defined for PHC (for example: SaMD, Digital health). Recognized as a thought partner internally who can proactively identify emerging trends & signals in healthcare, assess & communicate their impact, and develop strategic plans to capture/mitigate such impact.

Actively creates and contributes to the conditions for a culture of shared learning and peer to peer coaching with an eye toward making the team better.

Serves as a visible, credible champion/advocate for the PHC vision by effectively articulating the strategy and its value, particularly in the face of criticism or different priorities across the enterprise. This leader ensures that teams think thoroughly and critically about PHC concepts and their related strategy. This leader brings depth and sophistication in objection handling and preemptive stress-testing of content and thought to make those ideas as strong as possible.

Mindset and Capabilities

Relentless focus on patients and external landscape: the PHC Strategy Lead brings outside-in perspective and can be counted upon to center on stakeholder perspective in their focus areas. This includes willingness and skill to challenge senior stakeholders and evolve internal perspectives as needed to infuse this thinking more broadly across the organization.

Strong problem solving capabilities and interpersonal credibility: they have the ability to process complex and ambiguous business & clinical problems and think, connect and execute beyond individual silos but rather at a network or system level. They invest in relationships across the organization and can be called upon to facilitate complex multi-stakeholder interactions, and to guide decision making across boundaries.

Demonstrates intellectual curiosity and has an entrepreneurial character. Is passionate about the potential impact of PHC to improve the lives of patients and to improve healthcare systems. Goes beyond the obvious or previously known-answers to question assumptions and explore truly new-to-the-world opportunities beyond the status quo.

Proven track record for holding complexity while being able to clarify/simplify and to move others towards action.

Ability to engage and communicate effectively with senior cross-functional leaders across the varying organizational levels. Can influence and drive them toward decisions in a timely manner with limited depth of knowledge on particular subjects.

Juggles multiple priorities and get tangible with concrete ideas and steps towards creating an outcome -- rather than waiting for a perfect solution.

Outstanding communicator with excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

Role models Roche Values

Because of the breadth and reach required to be successful in this role, candidates are preferred who bring experience in more than one functional area, and who can be immediately operative across TA/DAs (Oncology, Neuroscience, I2O) while bringing depth in a particular disease area.
