NGP returns 27 percent of our proceeds to the nonprofit National Geographic Society to fund work in the areas of science, exploration, conservation and education.The National Geographic Television Legal Affairs Department is seeking an experienced television production and development lawyer with at least 2 years of unscripted television experience to join their team. This Counsel role will support the production management and development teams negotiate, draft and finalize all television programming deals as well as provide regular guidance on day to day television productions. This is a unique opportunity to be an important part of the Nat Geo television family, and to help Nat Geo continue to produce award winning documentaries and television programming.
This position will be located in Washington, DC.
Responsibilities:
The responsibilities for this Counsel position include drafting a wide variety of television agreements, including TV programming deals (acquisitions, commissions, co-productions and development deals), domestic and international license agreements, and other agreements for NGP’s international and domestic television properties. Counsel will serve as a primary legal advisor for television productions, including content review and clearance. Additionally, Counsel will provide legal analysis to internal clients as needed (often concerning legal rights and responsibilities, and risk assessment) in order to make informed business decisions. Finally, Counsel will liaise directly with legal counterparts at Disney/ABC to facilitate best practices exchanges.Basic Qualifications:
- At least 4 years of legal experience in a law firm or in-house legal department
- Must be a member of good standing in at least one state bar
- Strong interpersonal skills (multi-cultural/ written/verbal/negotiation)
- Needs to be able to handle advanced level reasoning tasks and have good judgement
- Familiarity with Word, Adobe, and Excel
- Must be able to respond to and interact with both internal and external senior level business executives in a professional, articulate, personable and useful manner. Must be very organized and detail-oriented. Must be comfortable multi-tasking and working in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in television preferred
Required Education
- JD or equivalent
- Strong academic credentials
- Admission and good standing status in a state Bar association
