Hybrid: This is a Hybrid position within our IT Organization. The role will allow employees to work offsite but will also require onsite work based on business needs. The selected candidate will be expected to commute to the innovation center to which they are assigned as their primary GM facility. This position requires an employee to be onsite 1-3 times per week. Relocation may be provided.

About the role:

This is a unique opportunity to help build a brand-new UX/UI Design and Architecture team in the Global Manufacturing IT space. This team will be focused on designing the user experience for the many applications that power our manufacturing plants, as well as managing multiple InnerSource reusable component library projects. Building vehicles is at the core of GM's business and this person will have an opportunity to be a part of bringing our plants into the electric future we're all striving for.

As the Lead React Developer, on this new team, you will be responsible for leading a high-visibility React reusable library product, which provides a suite of libraries to development teams, embodying our UX/UI design standards. With this project being run as an InnerSource effort (internal Open Source), you'll also be responsible for engaging with both the community of developers using the product, as well as the community of contributors and maintainers. You will work alongside the UX/UI designers on the team to promote good design, as well as React development best practices. This role embodies a passionate, yet pragmatic development leader that can analyze community needs and behaviors, successfully transform sometimes ambiguous requirements into quality product features, and chart a long-term course for one of our core products.

Responsibilities:
  • Ideate, design, and develop new, high-quality features
  • Triage, root-cause, and solution bugfixes
  • Facilitate all release activities for your product and broadcast release announcements
  • Work directly with the development community (our customers) to build new features that make their work developing React UIs easier
  • Promote community-driven development and help guide contributors of the project to make high-quality contributions
  • Act as a champion for React development best practices
  • Participate in Pull Request reviews and give meaningful feedback to contributors
  • Help gather usage metrics and find ways of reporting meaningful project activity and adoption statistics to leadership
  • Help build training and workshops for developers that are interested in learning React and our team's products
  • Research UI development trends and forecast future capabilities
  • Foster collaboration among teammates and evangelize the need for brand and application consistency
  • Help recruit and interview top tier candidates for open positions and embody the high standards of the team
  • Act as a mentor and coach to other members of the team to help further their professional growth
  • Take ownership and create personal professional growth objectives and find ways to achieve them

Additional Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:
  • 4 years of experience in React development
  • Deep understanding of React and the React development ecosystem
  • Mastery of common development tools like VS Code and IntelliJ / Webstorm
  • Open to feedback, knows how give and receive criticism, and how and when to defend design decisions
  • Strong written, visual, and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable with blank-slate initiatives as well as on-going established projects
  • Strong attention to detail and passionate problem solver with critical thinking skills
  • Proven track record of working with technically complex systems and on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience developing for a variety of form factors, including desktop, responsive web, and mobile platforms
  • Understanding of i18n, localization best practices, and WCAG accessibility standards
  • Exemplary interpersonal, presentation, and written communication skills; able to effectively communicate designs, ideas, and concepts to teams and influence key stakeholders
  • History of championing and evangelizing development best practices and design patterns, as well as firm working knowledge of usability principles and techniques

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience leading or contributing to Open Source or InnerSource projects
  • Experience with Material-UI (MUI) and/or Material Design
  • A passion for teaching others
  • Experience with contributing to the development of a design system
