SOCIAL SERVICE WORKER- VICTIM ADVOCATE TRAINEE

After 1st Year: $22.0360 Hourly ($45,835)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Completion of Bachelor’s degree in psychology, pre-law or social service work within twelve (12) months of hire -AND- completed internship program for at least one (1) term within a Prosecuting Attorney’s office, Police Department, Domestic Violence shelter, Child Advocacy agency, an educational setting or equivalent.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs professional casework duties in the Prosecutor’s Office; provides victims of violent and/or assaultive crimes and/or victim’s family members, with information regarding their rights pursuant to the Michigan Crime Victims Act; provides assistance to clients through case management of cases within the criminal justice system; makes referrals to community agencies upon request works under the supervision of the Crime Victim Service Supervisor and performs duties as required.

STATEMENT OF TASKS:

  • Conducts interviews with appropriate parties as required;
  • Writes case histories and/or casework studies and makes recommendations;
  • Counsel’s adults and/or juveniles as directed;
  • Makes referrals to community agencies;
  • Processing paperwork for Crime Victim Rights and Crime Victim Compensation;
  • Accompanying victims to court;
  • Assisting APAs with victim contact;
  • General work under supervision of Social Workers, Lead Social Workers and Casework Supervisor along with guidance of attorney staff;
  • Works in the District, Circuit- Family Division and Circuit Criminal division courts.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Good knowledge of current social, economic and health problems;
  • Good knowledge of the philosophy and provisions underlying social service legislation of the State of Michigan;
  • Ability and desire to work with people of all social strata and the capacity to do so with tolerance, sympathy, and objectivity;
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively and respectfully in a complex, multicultural work environment that values diversity, equality and inclusion;
  • Ability to appreciate the desires, needs, and rights of others;
  • Ability to understand and interpret regulations and laws;
  • Ability to present information both verbally and in writing;
  • Ability to communicate;
  • Ability to read and comprehend written material;
  • Ability to counsel;
  • Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships;
  • Ability to attend work regularly and work under stressful conditions;
  • Ability to use various computer programs.
