What You Will Do Engage with the regional and firmwide Sciences Practice Area in thought leadership, development of excellence in design and documentation, for science environments. Provide design and documentation of laboratory facilities for a range of projects. Develop architectural drawings and specifications to communicate planning concepts for project documentation and construction. Apply proper QA/QC methods throughout project. Lead periodic project programming, planning, and design meetings and presentations; ensure client is adequately briefed on project progress. Set up project team software parameters and manage standards. Participate in user group meetings (heads of departments, specialists, etc.) to collect program needs for laboratory specifications in technical facilities. Develop a comprehensive understanding of clients’ program requirements and standards and policies for completion. Assist in the design development, modification and/or review of laboratory planning concepts and solutions, prioritizing sustainably-responsible design. Assist in developing project scope, plan, and services during the contract process. Translate planning concepts into comprehensible terms for clients, designers and project team members. Assist in establishing overall project budgets and milestone schedules in coordination with the client, project managers, project engineers, and builders. Communicate planning concepts to project teams, both verbally and through graphic and written reports. Develop architectural drawings and specifications to communicate planning concepts for project documentation and construction. Prepare and modify architectural documents, elevations, sections, details, etc. Anticipate and develop solutions to technical and design problems following established standards. Your Qualifications Washington Architecture License required. Bachelor’s degree in architecture or equivalent in education or experience required. 10 years experience in Architecture inclusive of 5 years’ experience focused on programming and planning of all phases of a variety of laboratory types including: basic (biology/chemistry) research, food science, bio-containment (BSL), teaching (science), pharmaceutical manufacturing (cGMP), public health, vivarium, imaging, clinical research, and other related environments. Well-rounded, strategic-thinker with an integrated approach to design, management and technical project resolution who can help shape a vision for the future. Demonstrated commitment to sustainability and sustainable building practices required; Portfolios should include at least 1 project with this particular focus, and candidates should be prepared to talk to this in their interview, especially built projects with LEED, Living Building Challenge, WELL Building Standard , Fitwel and /or Net Zero Building certification. Experience working directly with senior management, scientists, laboratory managers and technicians, facilities and project managers, and other project stakeholders in determining and documenting programmatic requirements. Experience in laboratory programming, including space, operational, and equipment programming, lab design, construction documents, construction administration and project construction cost control for lab facilities. Demonstrable creativity, passion and interest in design and planning of laboratories within technical facilities. Understanding of structural, HVAC, and electrical systems design implications for labs. Knowledge of technical, code, and regulatory requirements for laboratory design. LEED accredited preferred. Demonstrated commitment to sustainability and sustainable building practices required. Committed to the principles of sustainable design and resilient communities, able to demonstrate this commitment in a portfolio of work. Capable of traveling to and from project sites for attending client, project and construction meetings. Proficiency in Revit required along with other typical business tools and programs. **The base salary will be estimated between $105,600 - $134,000 plus bonuses and benefits and contingent on relevant experience.
