The Department of Computational and Data Sciences (CDS) is seeking a dedicated and well-organized Academic Advising Support and Media & Events specialist to provide a wide range of administrative support to the Chair and the department in areas of academic advising support, web/social media presence, events management, and CDS STARS (undergraduate Teaching Assistants) program administration.
The incumbent will divide its time between four main areas: academic advising support, maintaining and creating materials for publication in all media avenues in use by the department, assisting with events management, and coordinating the CDS STARS program.
The selected candidate will be given training and access to appropriate Mason systems and must be able to handle confidential information and data as per Mason’s policies.

About the Position:
The Department of Computational and Data Sciences (CDS) is seeking a dedicated and well-organized Academic Advising Support and Media & Events specialist to provide a wide range of administrative support to the Chair and the department in areas of academic advising support, web/social media presence, events management, and CDS STARS (undergraduate Teaching Assistants) program administration.
The incumbent will divide its time between four main areas: academic advising support, maintaining and creating materials for publication in all media avenues in use by the department, assisting with events management, and coordinating the CDS STARS program.
The selected candidate will be given training and access to appropriate Mason systems and must be able to handle confidential information and data as per Mason’s policies.
Responsibilities:
- Advise students in course selection and degree completion planning;
- Assist students in defining, developing and implementing educational goals;
- Maintain constant interaction and follow-up with assigned students and maintain all relevant record-keeping and tracking through Degree Works and department processes;
- Updating and maintaining the CDS webpages and social media venues (such as Twitter and Facebook). The incumbent will also produce public materials for advertising and recruitment purposes;
- Planning, coordinating, and conducting multiple departmental events (such as the weekly seminars, visiting scholars’ lectures, student events, etc.). Organization and purchasing related to events will fall within this position’s responsibilities;
- Administration of the CDS STARS (undergraduate Teaching Assistants) program, including scheduling assignment, and other related duties; and
- Other duties may include assisting in the maintenance of the departmental databases, assisting with purchasing and other internal processes, as well as other related tasks on an as-needed basis.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Knowledge of web development software; strong web-editing skills, and familiarity with design software (Adobe, Photoshop or similar);
- Knowledge of social media channels including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and others;
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills with proven experience in professional writing/editing in the English language;
- Proficient organizational skills and attention to detail;
- Ability to work independently and proactively and to learn new skills as needed;
- Intermediate to expert levels in MS Office suite software; and
- Demonstrated attention to details.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with event coordination;
- Familiarity with web editors such as Drupal or similar open-source CMS;
- Experience in working in higher education institutions;
- In-depth understanding of FERPA;
- Ability to accurately evaluate student transcripts and/or records and provide appropriate advising; and
- Knowledge and/or experience with Degree Works, Banner-Ellucian and MicroStrategy systems.
