About the Position:
The Clinical Medical Assistant/Medical Data Specialist is a multi-skilled health professional who works interdependently with other health care professionals to provide quality health care to the patients in a clinic setting. The Medical Assistant/Medical Data Specialist is educated and trained to perform both administrative and clinical skills in the medical care environment. The Medical Assistant is directly responsible to the Executive Director or any other physician-appointed supervisor in the facility.
Responsibilities:
Clinic Skills
- Measures and records vital signs;
- Records patient intake, including allergies and current medications;
- Prepares patient for exam and performs routine testing;
- Performs EKG’s;
- Changes dressings, applies bandages and other first aid procedures;
- Maintains supplies, equipment, stocking and sterilizing instruments;
- Maintains a safe, efficient and orderly flow of patients through the clinic;
- Performs accurate, legal and ethical documentation and follows HIPAA guidelines;
- The Medical Assistant may support front desk as needed dependent upon staffing;
- The Medical Assistant will comply with all SHS and University policies; and
- Chaperones sensitive exams.
Administers Adult Immunizations
- Accurately and safely administers immunizations under the approved direction of the Executive Director;
- Accurately documents immunizations administered to the patient; and
- Schedules immunization appointments, per SHS protocol.
Phlebotomy/Laboratory Techniques and Safety Practices
- Performs phlebotomy;
- Performs basic laboratory CLIA waived tests;
- Disposes of biohazard waste according to OSHA standards;
- Practices OSHA safety standards;
- Operates required laboratory equipment and instruments; records data; complies with biohazard safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents in the workplace; and
- Processes specimens.
Member of one of the SHS standing committees
- Option to participate as an active contributing member of the one of the SHS committees (TBD at time of hire).
Required Qualifications:
- Experience and knowledge of adult ambulatory care practices;
- Experience and knowledge of unique needs of a college student;
- Excellent communication skills;
- Phlebotomy skills;
- Performs EKGs, Administers Nebulizer Treatment;
- Knowledge of Adolescent and Adult Immunization requirements;
- Knowledge of Electronic Medical Records;
- Medical Assistant Certification or equivocal training and experience;
- Healthcare Provider BLS certification;
- High School Diploma or GED;
- Some medical assistant or related experience in a hospital or health care setting in addition to clinical experience obtained while seeking a nursing degree; and
- Some experience in a physician’s office.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience typically obtained in one year working in a physician’s office (preferably in adult medicine or college health).
