Categories: Electronic Warfare, Modeling/Simulation, RF, Signal Processing, Aircraft, Data Analytics/Science, ISR & Tactical Systems, Space Systems, Threat Systems
The Signals and Systems Division of the Advanced Concepts Laboratory (ACL) is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Modeling & Simulation Engineer with an emphasis in radar and radio-frequency (RF) sensing and kill chains within the Systems Modeling and Simulation Branch. The Signals and Systems Division engages in research related to high-impact, technical analysis for U.S. Government projects. The division's mission is to shape the development of next-generation technical capabilities and strengthen our national defense through leading-edge research and analytic support, informed by a deep knowledge of operational capabilities, current intelligence, and the related information environment. The Systems Modeling and Simulation Branch provides first-principle subject matter expertise needed for modeling and simulation of next-generation concepts.
The Advanced Concepts Laboratory develops tailored solutions for a broad range of national security challenges through disciplined application of physics- and effects-based modeling to realizable systems, augmented with prototype development and testing. ACL's research thrusts extend across domains, and include bio-, chemical-, RF-, and optical-sensor physics; materials science and engineering; electromagnetic theory, computation, structures, and measurements; electronic warfare techniques and applications; operational scenario modeling and simulation; traditional and asymmetric threat analysis; and ground maneuver warfare.
The Modeling and Simulation (M&S) Engineer works closely with research, development, and testing teams to combine simulation modeling with data analytics in order to provide recommendations to optimize system designs in support of current and future research, development, and testing efforts. Specifically, the M&S Engineer is responsible for constructing computer simulation models, verifying and validating simulation models, performing simulation experiments to predict system behaviors, providing solutions to project stakeholders, and improving systems and processes. The M&S Engineer is familiar with important M&S concepts and techniques, constantly keeps abreast of new tool and language developments, and is familiar with a wide range of both open source and proprietary modeling and simulation tools, frameworks, and environments. These can include tools such as AFSIM, AnyLogic, Arena, ExtendSim, OpenFoam, OpenModelica, NetLogo, etc. In addition to tools, an M&S Engineer should be aware of many of the core M&S techniques - such as discrete event simulation, continuous simulation, agent based modeling, distributed simulation, and conceptual modelling. At higher levels, the M&S Engineer/Specialist guides and conducts modeling, simulation, and analysis activities which includes eliciting requirements from stakeholders to support the design and implementation of M&S frameworks, computer simulation models, and simulation experiments. Furthermore, the M&S Engineer is responsible for ensuring that models and simulations are designed according to M&S best practices and standards as well as for flexibility to support future modeling needs and enhancements.
Key Responsibilities- Manage all technical aspects of product or system design including directing multiple lab resources for large scale product or system analyses. -Manage sub-contractor resources supporting all M&S areas (definition, requirements analysis, synthesis, systems analysis and implementation).
- Conduct product or system design analysis translating requirements into valid models and experimental designs for systems of high complexity. Define/refine internal and external interfaces.
- Develop technical reports and diagrams detailing product or system attributes.
- Guide the development and strategy of reusable modeling expressions and tool chains
- Develop physics-based and digital processing models that evaluate performance of radar/RF sensors and systems that implement new technologies and concepts of operation.
- Design and conduct detailed trade studies to evaluate conceptual performance of RF concepts performance in order to meet design requirements.
- Provide RF system expertise for evaluating mission level force-on-force simulations.
- Interpret modeling and simulation data in order to provide feedback and conclusions to GTRI customers.
- Formulate and lead internal research and development program that focus on the modeling and simulation of next generation radars and RF sensors.
- Work with multi-disciplinary teams to generate creative and viable solutions for GTRI stakeholders.
- BS, MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Optical Science, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related discipline.
- 4-7 years of modeling and simulation for radar or RF sensing systems. This also includes modeling and simulation experience in relevant disciplines such as electromagnetics, communications, antenna design, RF propagation or similar.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to convey highly technical material in a clear, concise manner to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Programming experience with MATLAB, Python, or C to numerically model concepts and simulations.
- Able to obtain and maintain a DoD Top Secret Security Clearance.
- Active TS/SCI Clearance
- MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related discipline.
- Experience using force-on-force simulation tools (AFSIM, Benchmark, Suppressor, or similar tools).
- Additional experience in related fields including aerospace systems, space systems, electronic warfare, current and future kill chains.
- Program management experience.
10% - 25% travel
