GEOTEK, a market leader in high-performance, engineered pultruded composite structural solutions, is looking for an experienced Applications Engineer to join our engineering team. The Applications Engineer understands the customer’s requirements for new and existing fiberglass utility structure products and systems, provides engineering consultation and expertise, and utilizes project management skills to ensure customer needs are met. The Application Engineer supports all areas of our business from new product development, including innovation and R&D, to testing and validation, to continuous improvement of existing products and processes. Ideal candidates will be motivated and driven problem solvers, detail oriented, self-starters, and capable of managing and prioritizing work. This is a customer facing position and previous experience working directly with customers as well as experience in the electrical utility industry is considered highly desirable. Key areas of responsibility:
- Develop, maintain, and “own” the technical relationship with customers.
- Understand, develop, and clarify customer requirements for structural loading and usage.
- Perform distribution and transmission line design calculations, using hand calculations and/or CAD (such as PLS and/or SpidaCalc, etc) according to the NESC or the customer’s standard.
- Analyze and interpret test results with sound engineering judgement to make appropriate design decisions.
- Be a subject matter expert for the customer with respect to composite materials, FRP crossarms, utility structure designs (distribution and transmission), relevant codes and best practices.
- Be an advocate for use of fiberglass structures in utility structures applications, including improvements to existing applications, and development of new applications.
- Prepare and conduct presentations and proposals to customers, as needed.
- Participate in new product development and innovation projects as a leader, or team member.
- Develop design documentation such as engineering drawings, Bills of Materials, reports, etc.
- Conduct engineering review and approval of designs and other technical works.
- Collaborate with the Sales and Operations teams and partner with them to ensure all customer expectations are met.
- Represent GEOTEK/PUPI in front of the customer with a high degree of integrity, credibility, and passion; limited travel expected, up to 10%.
Qualifications:
- Four-year bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Composites, Civil, or Materials preferred); Professional Engineer (PE) license and/or advanced degrees are highly desirable.
- 3 years of experience within the electrical utility industry or related structural products and customer applications.
- CAD and MS Office skills are required. Proficiency in SolidWorks 3D CAD is preferred.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
- Demonstrated effective collaboration with customers, outside sales, inside sales and other company functions is expected. Customer facing experience considered highly desirable.
- A self-starter with a sense of urgency to prioritize actions to complete requested tasks on time and adapt to shifts in priorities based upon changing customer needs.
- Understand and effectively balance the needs of the customer with the needs of the business.
- Resolve issues with tact and gain trust/credibility with GEOTEK customers and sales.
- Demonstrate successful projects and relationships.
- Promotes an active continuous improvement environment.
- Work experience in fiberglass-reinforced product and applications is a plus.
- Work experience in standards engineering for power distribution equipment is a plus.
PHYSICAL WORK CONDITIONS
• 50 – 50 splits between office and plant work environment.
• While working on the floor there will be work with and around moving machinery, fumes and chemicals.
• Office work requires sitting at a desk, using a computer and phone.
