Gerdau Special Steel North America is an engineered bar producer headquartered in Jackson, Michigan with world-class steel manufacturing mills in Jackson, Michigan, Monroe Michigan, and Fort Smith, Arkansas, and a metal processing facility in Huntington, Indiana.
With engineered steel bar producing capabilities in North America and Brazil, the Gerdau Special Steel group is one of the largest supplier of SBQ engineered steel bars to the global automotive and heavy truck industries.
BASIC FUNCTION:
The Rolling Mill Supervisor is responsible for ensuring standardization of processes within their assigned area of responsibility (cell). Ensures that standardized processes relating to safety and operations are effectively executed and properly documented. Ensures the required training is provided to personnel responsible for operating to the standards. Assists in failure analysis when significant problems occur. Compares performance to existing standards. Makes appropriate updates to standards when needed. Performs audits of performance against standards and develops appropriate corrective action to ensure compliance.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
The primary function of the Rolling Mill Supervisor is to ensure that routine management efforts are carried out within the department and to assist with improvement efforts. This activity will include conducting operational audits, coaching operators on production and quality improvement programs. Ensures area 5S, achieve cost control and environmental control goals, development of operator preventive maintenance processes, and development of correct procedures for safety management.
The Rolling Mill Supervisor reports directly to and is supported by the Rolling Mill Superintendent and collaborates with other Plant Leaders. Incumbents typically are assigned to perform in specific areas of responsibility associated with rolling mill operations, safety, cost, training, quality, etc. Areas of responsibility are called cells and are outlined as;
- Rolling Mill – Hot Saws
- Roll Shop
- Product Finishing Line
- Rework
Qualifications for this position include experience in rolling mill-related work equal to 3 years. Lesser jobs of 3 – 5 years, with practical experience, that pertain to melting, casting, maintenance or finishing will be considered. A four-year college degree in engineering, business administration, or related field is highly preferred for this position. Strong working knowledge of rolling theory and heavy mill machinery and related equipment are also preferred.
The incumbent will be responsible for managing standard processes that enable high production levels while ensuring the safety of the team. The incumbent audits workforce performance to the standards following established procedures, job aids, and operator instructions following a predetermined schedule. Results of these audits are documented and corrective actions are applied as necessary to ensure performance to standards.
The incumbent trains, coaches and develops direct reports in the area of responsibility. Is responsible for training and development in failure analysis and other improvement methodology and provides follow-up support to ensure that these efforts are performed properly and oversees the execution of the action plans developed as a result of these efforts.
The incumbent tracks the performance of control items and communicates this performance to the appropriate operations and management teams. Possesses the skills required to perform trend analysis of the performance data and identify commonalities within the data, including the requisite computer skills necessary to carry out these responsibilities. Must be able to communicate these results appropriately, including formal presentations in front of a group of people.
