Gerry’s Cafe is a non-profit business in Arlington Heights, employing 40 or more individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, where they are celebrated and valued for their contributions to the workplace. The staff will be trained, coached, and encouraged to succeed in their jobs within the cafe.
Our Mission is to operate a community destination cafe, offering craft food and beverage, prepared, and served by employees, twenty-two and older, with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Gerry’s Cafe will be open for business Tuesday through Sunday 7am-4pm. This will be the starting point for the Flagship Cafe and can change based on business needs.
We are hiring CAFE Workers who will be trained to perform various duties in our flagship cafe. Our cafe workers will be responsible for a variety of duties that are essential for the cafe to run efficiently and responsibly.
The primary job types and some of the associated capabilities/skills desired are as follows:
- Food Runners-read, mobile, be able to read and match numbers, good communicator, respond to customers, problem solver, reciprocal conversation
- Food Prep-ability to measure, read a menu, follow a six step menu, knife skills, work with others, take directions, mixing dough, scooping, familiar with oven use/safety
- Coffee & Smoothie Baristas- be able to read, read menu, follow six step directions, motor skills to pour and use of tongs, be able to carry a drink and hand it to customers
- Cashiers-cashless point of sale, touch picture of order, conversational skills, provide instructions/directions to customer, problem solving, good eye contact
- Utility/Dishwasher Associates- follow six step directions, fine motor skills, lift heavy items, attention to detail, load dishwasher, hand wash large items, put dishes away
- Greeters/Busser-eye contact, ability to communicate verbally or with assisted technology, confidence to greet at the appropriate time, reciprocal conversion
Minimum requirements:
- Must be 22 years of age
- Must be authorize to work in the U.S.
- Must have high school diploma/GED/certificate of completion
