Summary
Are you passionate about environmental conservation and eager to develop your leadership skills? We are seeking dedicated individuals to join for a 12-week (450 hours) outdoor conservation project experience.
Location: Flagstaff, Arizona
Our projects span across the beautiful Southwest, including Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, and more. Common sites include the Coconino National Forest, Grand Canyon National Park, Santa Fe National Forest, Capulin Volcano National Monument, Rainbow Bridge National Monument, and Prescott National Forest.
Schedule
Schedules vary but typically involve:
8 days on / 6 days off
4 days on / 3 days off
Remote projects may require staying on-site for multiple cycles.
Benefits
Living Allowance: $480/week, paid bi-weekly
Education Award: $1,824.07 (for 12 weeks) upon successful completion
Food: Provided during project days; members handle their own food on off days
Housing: Free accommodations during the service term. Hostel-style in Flagstaff, AZ, or remote housing near project sites.
Additional Benefits: Eligible for childcare coverage and federal loan forbearance (with additional enrollment steps required).
Gear
Provided: Tent
Members supply: Sleeping bag, sleeping pad, rain gear, hiking boots
A detailed packing list will be provided upon acceptance, including access to discounted gear through Outdoor Prolink.
Travel
Transportation to and from worksites is provided.
Personal vehicles are not necessary.
Relocation assistance is not provided.
Position Description
You will assist Crew Leaders in managing teams of Conservation Corps members. Your role includes providing leadership, training in technical skills, and overseeing smaller teams. Work is outdoors and physically demanding, often involving backcountry camping in diverse weather conditions.
Projects Typically Include
Trail construction and maintenance
Invasive species removal
Habitat restoration
Fence installation/repair
Dry and wet stone masonry
Forest management
Fire fuels reduction
Typical Duties
Lead and assist crews in conservation projects
Handle logistics: transportation, tools, equipment, living arrangements, and field communication
Receive driver training and transport crew to worksites
Manage crew camp efficiently and oversee the de-rig process
Qualifications
Required:
U.S. Citizen or permanent resident
At least 3 months of experience in crew-based conservation fieldwork
Willingness to work in groups and outdoors in various weather conditions
Pass a three-part criminal history check
Preferred
Experience in hiking and navigation in steep terrain
Strong interest in pursuing a career in conservation
Experience or interest in community volunteering
Enthusiasm for outdoor work
Physical Demands And Working Conditions
Frequent physical activity: sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying equipment, etc.
Ability to hike over rough terrain and camp under field conditions
Work in varying weather conditions
Moderate to high noise levels from tools
Environmental Conditions/Hazards
Exposure to extreme temperatures, rocky terrain, wetlands, insects, and wildlife
