Adult Peer Support Services (APSS) is a community-based service for adults aged eighteen and older who have a mental illness or a substance abuse disorder. APSS provides structured, scheduled activities that promote recovery, self-determination, self-advocacy, and enhancement of community living skills. The Adult Peer Support Service is an individualized, recovery-focused service, based on a relationship of mutuality that allows the individual an opportunity to learn to manage his or her own recovery.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Provide services to consumers in the community through one on one sessions or through group settings. Also, including assisting in completing applications and referral forms to obtain services to consumers.
  • Monitor services provided to consumers in all settings.
  • Utilize therapeutic communication skills to engage consumers during treatment.
  • Interact with program participants and co-workers with empathy while maintaining dignity and confidentiality.
  • Provide wellness education via teaching problem solving, anger management, and other life skills.
  • Request specific and appropriate information about the consumer from involved treatment providers to promote continuity of care.
  • Incorporate relevant socio-economic and cultural variables into consumer's plan of care.
  • Observe, report, and document signs and symptoms or changes in consumer's behavior on appropriate forms to be included in consumer's medical record.
  • Complete required documentation as consumer's needs change.
  • Write necessary reports to appropriate entities for the purpose of accessing services on the consumer's behalf.
  • Lead support groups for consumers and community members.

Education, Experience and Certifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Successful completion of Certified Peer Support Training Program (5-day training with written and verbal exams.)
  • Self-identified as having a mental illness or recovering from substance abuse; attend Peer Support Training; have an understanding of the recovery process and how to use the process to help others.

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Day shift
  • Monday to Friday
