What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Soil Scientist position at Gilmore & Associates, Inc.?
The Staff Scientist is responsible for the year-round collection of field data and the preparation of figures and reports for soils, geotechnical, and environmental investigations.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
· Collect data – e.g. soil descriptions, test pit and test boring logs, water levels, collect field samples, record infiltration rates, transport and implement testing equipment
· Documentation of construction work and tests performed
· Report information to project managers – verbal and written reports
· Coordinate with Township regulators
· Observe and confirm external consultants work on behalf of municipal clients
· Oversee contractors – e.g. drillers, backhoe operators, laboratories, geophysical surveys
· Desktop review and research –review scientific and engineering reports, review of physical setting sources such as geologic and soils maps, topographic maps, and aerial photography
· Prepare written reports, drawings, and tables with information collected including maps and logs – Use of computer e.g. CAD, Excel, Word, PA1Call, etc.
Essential Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in Soil Science, Geology, or related geoscience field.
· Driver’s License
· SEO, CPSS certifications are preferred
Essential Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
· Fundamentals of Soil Classification, map reading skills, field training
·
· Good communication skills, both written and oral
· Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word/Excel/Outlook), CAD preferred
· Comprehend project goals, questions, issues, roles, scope, respond or coordinate response through supervisor
· Ability to prioritize projects to meet deadlines and budgets
· Focus attention on job at hand – Maintain focus when working on multiple projects, while working in both office and field
Essential Position Requirements:
· Ability to work additional and/or nonstandard office hours, as required
· Occasional travel – possible overnight
· Must have working vehicle
· Must be able to lift and carry 25 lbs. of equipment
· Ability to walk through brush, up hills, etc.
