Position Scope

The Middle School Coordinator promotes and supports the vision and direction of Gilmour Academy Middle School by providing high-quality, professional leadership, ensuring the highest standards of teaching, learning and achievement. While the Coordinator works closely with faculty and is involved in academic/administrative tasks, the primary job responsibilities focus on the supervision and monitoring of students and corresponding communication with students, parents, and faculty. The Coordinator works closely with the Director of the Upper School, the Dean of Student Life and Leadership, and the counseling staff to implement and enforce school policies and administrative rules and regulations. The Coordinator oversees the day-to-day management of the Middle School students, faculty, staff, resources, and facilities.

The Middle School Coordinator reports to the Director of the Upper School who has overall strategic responsibility for the division.

Key Responsibilities

Vision, Direction

The Middle School Coordinator works in tandem with the Director of the Upper School in developing both strategic and operational plans for securing the vision and direction of the division based on consultation with relevant stakeholders. The Middle School Coordinator works with divisional faculty and other key stakeholders to ensure the school’s vision is clearly articulated, shared, understood, and acted upon effectively by all.

The Middle School Coordinator demonstrates the school’s mission, vision, and values in everyday work and practice.

The Middle School Coordinator ensures that all school policies are regularly reviewed and updated and that faculty and staff are involved in this process advising/supporting staff in policy development and implementation.

The Middle School Coordinator helps to ensure that the divisional website and online communication tools are regularly updated and maintained to a high standard to promote Gilmour Academy Middle School within the local, national and global community.

Leadership

The Middle School Coordinator has a key role in ensuring the effective management of students’ behavior by actively promoting good behavior, supporting staff, parents, and caregivers in promoting good behavior in all students, and ensuring that all students and adults are enabled to succeed in school without hindrance or disruption.

The Middle School Coordinator works with the Middle School Counselor in the planning, development, and implementation of the Middle School Advisory program and all other student programs.

The Middle School Coordinator helps to raise standards of achievement, coordinating day-to-day activities of the school (students, faculty, staff, resources, and building) so as to promote and secure the academic, social, emotional, and spiritual achievement and well-being of all students and adults.

The Middle School Coordinator works with faculty, staff, parents, and students to create an environment in which all students and staff are able to achieve success and build towards achieving their potential.

The Middle School Coordinator promotes the highest standards of courtesy and mutual respect amongst all members of the school community, encourages and models initiative, teamwork, and working in partnership, and develops and strengthens leadership, including faculty leadership, across the school.

The Middle School Coordinator maintains a consistent and continuous focus on student achievement and attainment, making sure that assessment for learning is good throughout the school and that all teaching staff use data effectively.

The Middle School Coordinator Implements effective behavioral intervention and support programs, the impact of which are regularly reviewed and evaluated with the Director of the Upper School, Dean of Students, the Middle School Counselor, and the Director of Student Support Services.

The Middle School Coordinator ensures the school environment, including each classroom environment, reflects and supports high-quality learning creating a culture and ethos of challenge and support where all children can achieve success, have an appropriate layer of challenge, and become engaged in their own learning.

Managing the Organization

The Middle School Coordinator manages the day-to-day operations of the internal organization, managing and controlling the school.

Faculty and staff are seen as the major resource in achieving the school’s success. The Middle School Coordinator works closely with the divisional leadership team in recruiting, retaining and deploying staff appropriately so that the goals and targets for the school can be achieved.

The Middle School Coordinator communicates disciplinary concerns with parents and staff ensuring the overall safety of the school premises. The Middle School Coordinator also ensures the timely reporting of student infractions and consequences to families and other reporting systems/agencies and monitors detention.

The Middle School Coordinator designs and executes procedures for arrival, dismissal, and other Middle School routines ensuring students are held accountable to the Code of Conduct, monitoring behavior in hallways, commons, at athletic events and other school-sponsored events, takes attendance at convocation and monitors attendance every period of the school day.

The Middle School Coordinator makes arrangements for the security and effective supervision of the school buildings, contents, and grounds.

The Middle School Coordinator encourages inter-school links and events of mutual benefit to Gilmour Academy and the students at the Middle School.

The Middle School Coordinator assists in the development, coordination, and implementation of Admissions related activities including open houses, shadow days, Middle School Bring-a-Friend Day, etc., positively promoting the Academy and assisting with recruitment efforts.

The Middle School Coordinator takes the lead in coordinating the organization and implementation of the end-of-the-year Middle School class trip and the Rite of Passage ceremony.

TRAITS AND CHARACTERISTICS

Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, leadership, operational methods, and coordination of people and resources.

Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.

Knowledge of human behavior and performance, individual differences in ability, personality, and interests, learning and motivation, and procedures for personnel recruitment, selection, training, and management.

Knowledge of safety operations, for the protection of people, data, and property. Evidence of sufficient security and judgment to handle crisis situations.

Bachelor's degree or higher in Education or related field of study (master's degree preferred).

A minimum of five years of teaching experience accompanied by experience in a leadership role (department chair)

Willingness to participate in professional development in school leadership through ISACS, CCIS, and Boston College’s Lynch Leadership satellite program.
