Pay: $130/day

Position Summary

The Health Assistant, under the supervision of the Health Supervisor, Camp Director, and under the standing orders and technical direction of a licensed physician, adhering to all GSUSA Safety Activity Checkpoints and the GSGLA Camp Lakota Health Manual. The Health Assistant is responsible for overseeing and promoting the general health, safety, and sanitation of the campers, staff, and entire camp. The Health Assistant will help distribute medications and assist campers with all health-related needs.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing health care to meet individual needs of camp staff and campers.

    • Assist in the daily medication distribution and management.

    • Provide care as needed for both staff and campers seeking medical attention under the direction and supervision of the health supervisor, within the scope of their skills, the camp’s health care manual and treatment plan.

    • Assist in the supervision of both staff and campers while in the care of the health team.

    • Provide CPR and First Aid coverage as needed at designated times and locations.

    • Collaborate with the health supervisor, administrative camp staff and other medical staff as necessary to ensure medical needs are met.

  • Organize, maintain, and utilize adequate resources for serving the health and medical needs of the campers and staff.

    • Assist in setting up the camp health center under the supervision of the health supervisor and administrative team.

    • In collaboration with the camp director and health supervisor, identify inventory needs and order and maintain stock of all necessary medical supplies and equipment identified in the camp health care manual.

  • Assist in the maintenance of accurate and detailed medical records according to state, American Camp Association, and GSGLA standards.

    • Ensure staff and camper health examinations are current and on file.

    • Prepare and utilize daily medical log for treatment and medications.

    • Prepare and record insurance and accident report forms.

    • Record and maintain caregiver communication logs.

  • Assist in overseeing First Aid procedures and supplies

    • Prepare and distribute first aid kits as needed throughout the camp.

    • Ensure supplies in first aid kits are stocked in accordance with the camp healthcare manual and distributed as needed.

  • Assist in screening all campers and staff upon arrival at camp.

    • Verify health history and examination.

    • Verify emergency authorization.

    • Identify any observable evidence of illness or communicable disease.

    • Conduct a health assessment.

    • Secure all medications used by campers and staff.

  • Assist in supervising sanitary conditions throughout camp.

    • Report any health problems or symptoms of illness to the health supervisor and Camp Director.

  • Participate and effectively communicate as a member of the camp team.

    • Address staff and campers’ health concerns in a timely manner and report any health problems or symptoms of illness to the Camp Director.

    • Serve as a role model through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.

    • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special programs, sleep outs, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.

  • Other duties as assigned.

GSGLA Lakota Overnight Camp

The Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles Camp Lakota is a state of the art, recently updated overnight camp. Located just 90 miles from downtown Los Angeles, this premier camp site will host a full summer camp season. The camp will focus on providing a stand-out girl-led experience for campers of all ages and communities across our 6,272 square mile footprint. The camp offers a variety of specialty activities including a high ropes challenge course, horseback riding, swimming, and archery.

Qualifications (Minimum Education and Experience)

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Experience in both children and adult illness/injury care.
  • College degree preferred. .
  • Ability to drive, possession of a valid driver’s license, and clean DMV record.
  • Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR prior to first day of work.
  • Must submit health history form prior to first day of work.
  • Must be committed to work the entire camp season and attend all pre-camp trainings.
  • Ability to live onsite acting as an on-duty supervisor for the duration of the camp season.

Physical Requirements

  • The incumbent must be able to perform this job safely, without endangering the health or safety of themselves or others.
  • Communicates and works with all ages and skill levels and provides necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  • Observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures when appropriate, and apply behavior-management techniques when appropriate.
  • Constantly responds appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers and staff in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Frequently moves luggage, tables, chairs, and program equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Needs to traverse and move several miles daily, at various grades, elevations, and on uneven terrain.
  • Possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Needs to sustain activity at 6,000 feet (1830 meters) in elevation.
  • May lift to 50 lbs. periodically. If more, the incumbent must request assistance.
  • Must be able to live in a rustic camp setting and work flexible hours.
  • Operate with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.
