STEM Ropes Course Instructor

  • This is a seasonal position located at the STEM Center of Excellence in Southwest Dallas.
  • The pay rate is $15.00-$17.00/hour.

JOB SUMMARY:

 

The STEM Outdoor Amenities Team is responsible for participating in the assigned activity during the summer camp and/or weekend camping season.  This person is responsible for the planning and implementation of Girl Scout programs in outdoor settings and for the safeguarding of participants’ health, safety, and security. 

 

The STEM Ropes Course Instructor is responsible for participating as a member of the STEM Center outdoor team in the assigned ropes course activity during the summer camp and/or weekend camping season and in the planning and implementation of Girl Scout programs in outdoor settings and for the safeguarding of participants’ health, safety, and security.  The specific responsibilities of this position, include, but are not limited to, the overall planning and implementation of ropes course programs, including any substitute activities provided during inclement weather, while providing a fun ropes course experience.   The incumbent must successfully complete the ropes course certification process to continue being employed.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS – Ropes Course Instructor:

 

  • Serves as the Ropes Course Instructor during the assigned shift.
  • Participates in directing ropes course activities with the various camp groups, including but not limited to housekeeping responsibilities, skill review, equipment maintenance, badge workshops, and supervising participant interactions.
  • Participates in instructing the groups in the safe use of the ropes course, teamwork activities as appropriate, and including the physics of the ropes course when appropriate and in conjunction with the ropes course experience.
  • Confident and able to use all aspects of the ropes course training including but not limited to team building exercises, lead climbing, belaying, ropes course setup and take down as well as maintaining the daily log book for each course.
  • Responsible for maintaining current ropes course certification and/or training requirements in conjunction with the standards as detailed in the GSUSA Safety Activity Checkpoints. 
  • Conducts, prepares and carries out assigned ropes course activities with assigned groups and implements and monitors the program activities to ensure they are in compliance with Girl Scout program standards, safety and security guidelines, and GSUSA Safety Activity Checkpoints.
  • Implements and manages all specialized ropes course activities as needed, and certifications allow.
  • Follows established ropes course procedures.
  • Willing to conduct alternative, indoor activities during times of inclement weather when use of the ropes course range is not feasible.
  • Willing to complete on-site ropes course training and/or certification (GSNETX will provide the training).
  • Responsible for compliance with ACA standards, Texas Department of State Health, GSUSA & GSNETX Policies, and operational procedures, regulations, and standards.
  • Serves as and is responsible for being a role model for all participants, in behavior and attitude while following the Girl Scout Promise and Law and established STEM Center procedures.
  • Remains alert and responds to potential hazardous situations, including following established emergency procedures when required.
  • Monitor weather conditions and use current emergency procedures when inclement weather is imminent.
  • Performs all other duties, as assigned, or as delegated by their supervisor.

 


JOB REQUIREMENTS - Ropes Course Instructor:

 

  • On-site ropes specific training and/or certification provided by GSNETX.
  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Bilingual a plus (preferred, but not required).
  • Knowledge of and ability to work with adults and children ages 5 and above.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the philosophy and program of Girl Scouting or willingness to learn.
  • Flexible and creative in carrying out responsibilities.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to function as part of a team.

  • Holds valid drivers’ license and meets GSNETX driving record & automobile insurance requirements (If applicable).
  • Attendance is an essential job requirement defined as having regular, consistent, reliable, punctual and predictable attendance including the ability to work regular hours and shifts, before and after hours, and on weekends, when required.
  • Must complete and pass a criminal background check.

 

 

 

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES – Ropes Course Instructor:

  • Must complete “Protecting Our Girls” GSNETX training and CPR/AED First Aid training, which are required prior to first contact with campers.  (Provided by GSNETX.)
  • On site ropes course training & certification will be provided.

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT (Ropes Instructor/Archery Instructor/Lifeguard):

 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an   employee   to   successfully   perform   the   essential   functions   of   this   position. The employee frequently is required to use hands or fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls.  The employee is often required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, work in an office environment, work in a seated position, and work with computers.

 

The employee must be able to drive and have a valid driver’s license.  The employee must be able to lift or move 40 pounds or perform light work exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 

Activities occur both inside and outside and employee is subject to both environmental conditions; however, employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
