Position Summary:

Girl Scouts of Western Washington is excited to give you the opportunity to join our Seasonal Program Specialist Team to experience Summer at 2 beautiful lakefront camp properties in Western Washington. Summer will start at Camp St. Albans, at the base of the Olympic mountains on Lake Devereaux in Allyn, Washington followed by 3 weeks of summer fun at Camp River Ranch, located at the foothills of the Cascades in Carnation, Washington.

This position differs from a typical overnight camp staff position in that it is an hourly role, covering program areas at camp for user groups who make site reservations. Camp staff will attend paid staff training and will receive assistance to move between camp properties during the week we changeover in July.

This is a Seasonal Camp position paying $18.69/Hour, up to 40 hours per week. Typical working hours are roughly Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday – Saturday 8am – 5pm, and Sunday morning, with the option to reside on or off camp property.

The Boating and Adventure Program Specialist position helps develop campers of courage, confidence and character through nature and the outdoors. This position will enrich camper’s experience by designing and implementing quality, age-appropriate small craft programming with canoes, kayaks, Stand Up Paddle Boards, and Viking boats, water games, sports, backpacking, along with other outdoor adventure curriculum activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities. The Boating and Adventure Program Specialist will work closely with the Director of Camp Program to ensure the programming is adequately supported and properly executed. Program Specialists coordinate program activities molded to the goals and interests of the user groups. Specialists can expect to work a minimum of 20 hours per week, up to 40 hours dependent on user program reservations and other camp duties as assigned; they may expect to work within their activity area 6-8 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Requirements

General Responsibilities

  • Lead Boating programs requested by user groups at camp in July and August.
  • Prepare and lead innovative outdoor adventure program activities that are engaging, age-appropriate, camp-appropriate
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked program area
  • Ensure work/program areas and activities are safe and meet the requirements of the American Camp Association, Local Health Department, Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints and GSWW
  • Responsible for the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in program areas
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those assigned.
  • Responsible for observing camper behavior, enforcing appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and applying appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
  • Encourage respect for others, the environment, and private property
  • Complete paperwork in a timely fashion, including equipment logs and requests, Incident Reports, evaluations, and weekly schedules
  • Communicate clearly with supervising staff
  • Set a good example by demonstrating maturity, good communication techniques, cleanliness, good hygiene, punctuality, sportsmanship, sharing, and following rules among other traits.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability or willingness to obtain GSWW Small Craft Safety Certification (offered during staff training)
  • Passion for youth programming
  • Desire and ability to supervise and instruct adult volunteers and youth of various ages in an outdoor setting
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification or willingness to obtain
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards
  • Ability to rack and unrack watercraft, sometimes unassisted
  • Ability and willingness to successfully complete Small Craft Safety Training
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control
  • Ability to receive instruction and supervision
  • Exhibits responsible behavior at all times
  • Exhibits good judgment and risk management assessment skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience planning and leading adventure program activities such as archery and backpacking activities for adults and campers aged 5 and older
  • Previous Girl Scout and/or camp experience
  • College or Trade school coursework preferred
  • Knowledge of Girl Scout programming, awards, and culture preferred
  • Familiarity with the American Camp Association Standards and Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints.
  • Comfort with and ability to perform various camp activities including hiking, fire building, spending time outdoors in various weather conditions, etc.
