Gizmologist Position Description
Full-Time/Hourly Position

Gizmo-CdA, Coeur d’Alene's community makerspace, builds creative confidence and curiosity through programs that give all people access to tools, technologies, and mentors.
Summary
The Gizmologist is a multifaceted position that shares responsibility for maintaining the makerspace, operating and servicing equipment, providing member assistance, mentoring, prototyping assistance, and creating and teaching classes, all with the goal of encouraging lifelong learning in a safe and operational space. In addition to maintaining the machinery, the Gizmologist will help to create and implement policies and procedures for the safe use of the makerspace and the equipment, including the training of others on these practices. Member Service and shared responsibility for maintaining the makerspace are utmost priorities. This position may help to coordinate the activities and tasks of other staff members, however, this position has no supervisory responsibilities. This position reports to the Executive Director.
Essential Functions

- Ensure exemplary, professional, prompt, efficient and courteous member service.
- Perform daily tasks necessary to maintain an orderly, prepared environment, including attention to equipment upkeep and cleaning, ensuring the entirety of the makerspace is in good condition and ready for use.
- Develop the skills necessary to maintain and repair equipment, ensuring timely record keeping.
- Coordinate with Lead Gizmologist to keep the Executive Director informed as to ongoing repairs, maintenance, and replacement of equipment and consumables.
- Participate as a liaison between the Shop Stewards, Instructors, Members, Vendors, and the Executive Director.
- Collaboratively work with staff on projects and planning on a daily basis to enhance the educational enrichment of the makerspace.
- Help to create, maintain, and update safety standards, procedures, and policies for using the makerspace. Aid in the development of training materials specific to safety and operational procedures, equipment usage, and certification methodologies.
- Coordinate with the Lead Gizmologist to identify high use areas in the makerspace, looking for opportunities to improve staff and member knowledge and resources to improve member experience.
- Advise and mentor individuals, acting in a support capacity for those who are working to pursue development through training and experience.
- Create and deliver classes, adjusting teaching methodologies to meet the needs of diverse learners.
- Complete and maintain training records and member certification in a timely manner.
- Develop an understanding of current industry trends and assess innovative methodologies, technologies, and approaches. Identify opportunities for improvement and communicate them to leadership for the growth of the makerspace.
- Help to create new processes/content/technologies and assess/validate/document successes and attempts.
- Effectively troubleshoot and solve various situations, including ones that may be initially unfamiliar.
- May be required to attend meetings, trainings, and conferences to better meet the needs of our learners.
- Initiate personal growth in areas related to the mission of Gizmo-CdA, Inc.
- Act as a good steward and representative of Gizmo and its mission at all times.
- Perform other miscellaneous duties including, but not limited to, opening and closing procedures, based upon assigned schedule.

Work Environment
This job operates in a dynamic environment. The makerspace consists of a diverse collection of specialized machinery, tools, and equipment. This position may have exposure and duties in all areas of operation. It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure their safety and obtain appropriate training. Additionally, this role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, and filing cabinets. Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in a shared work area with varied noise levels. Some evenings and weekends may be required.
Physical Demands
The size, physical layout, and diverse areas that comprise Gizmo, create a mix of industrial and sedentary spaces. The physical demands on employees therefore range from limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs. to moderate exertion requiring mobility, flexibility, balance, and lifting of up to 50 lbs. Job tasks may require occasional climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping. Must be capable of climbing/descending stairs in an emergency situation. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.
Required Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Analytical and problem solving skills as developed through a combination of education and/or work experience

Preferred Education and Experience
- Demonstrated history of high-level of customer service
- Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques related to makerspaces and/or experiential learning
- Technical and/or vocational education or trades skillsets
- Possess foundational mechanical, engineering, and/or electrical understanding and working knowledge of tools and equipment, and an operational knowledge of computer hardware and software
- Demonstrated educational instruction experience, serving diverse learners in learning environments
- Knowledgeable and proficient in the use of computer software such as Google Workspace Applications and internet browsers
- Understanding of CAD/CAM, engineering, and prototyping processes
- Leadership experience
Travel
Some travel may be required. If travel is necessary, the employee must be capable of travel by automobile (as driver and passenger), commercial airlines, rental vehicles and public transportation and be able to lodge in public facilities.

Physical Requirements
Is able to bend, sit, and stand in order to perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs. Must be capable of climbing/descending stairs in an emergency situation. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including computer terminals and keyboards, telephones, printers, and calculators. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary. Must be able to work extended hours or travel off site whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.
