Glenmary Home Missioners is seeking a Director of Evangelization to promote the evangelization of non-Christians* by directing and supervising efforts toward, and personally being involved in, deepening relationships, promoting dialogue, living charity, and prophetically and prudently sharing the fullness of the gospel, with non-Christians. The Director will supervise those holding the position of Lay Evangelizer within Glenmary.
*The target audience for this position is non-Christians. This target audience is delineated as individuals who self-identify, or are living, as ‘unaffiliated,’ ‘unchurched,’ or NONEs (indicating that they have no religious preference), even though they may have some background in Christianity. Though the Director of Evangelization will likely engage ‘inactive’ Catholics, this group is not the primary audience for this position.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Evangelization is a co-worker of the Glenmary Home Missioners with the expectation s/he will adopt the missionary charism of Glenmary. This position, within Glenmary, is one of leadership ministry, under the supervision of the Chair of the Evangelization Commission (or delegate), and in collaboration with the Commission.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Hires and supervises Lay Evangelizers in Glenmary. The primary, though not exclusive, responsibility of Lay Evangelizers is to plan, organize, and carry out creative methods and practices of evangelization outside of the normal functioning of the Catholic parish within the Glenmary mission(s) where the Lay Evangelizers are assigned. These methods and practices can include, for instance, ‘Alpha Groups,’ ‘presence ministry,’ or ‘fresh expressions of the church.’
- Personally plans, organizes, and carries out creative methods and practices of ‘outreach’ evangelization outside of the normal functioning of Catholics parishes in Glenmary missions or the Cincinnati region, which can include, for instance, ‘Alpha Groups,’ ‘presence ministry,’ or ‘fresh expressions of the church,’ with the goals of encountering, engaging with, and sharing the gospel with, non-Christians, as defined above.
- Personally organizes, and invites, non-Christians to participate in ‘intermediary,’ ‘seeker friendly’ expressions of faith practice, such as reading groups, bible studies, prayer groups, or praise gatherings, with the goal that this participation leads to full communion in the Catholic Church. The learnings from these gatherings are to be shared with the broader Glenmary community and universal Church.
- Collaborates with Glenmary missioners, their parishioners, and other people of good will, in the Glenmary missionary apostolate to promote efforts of the evangelization of non-Christians in Glenmary mission areas. This will include training parishioners and others in the task of evangelization.
- Promotes efforts, and seeks to learn from previously existing manifestations, of the evangelization of non-Christians on a regional or national level with a specific eye to affecting the Glenmary missionary apostolate. Collaborates, when appropriate, with Glenmary’s Director of Ecumenism and Director of Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation (JPIC) to complete this task.
- Partners with diocesan and other national or regional events related to, or organizations concerned with, the evangelization of non-Christians with a specific eye to affecting the Glenmary missionary apostolate. Promotes, on a national level, Glenmary’s methods, vision, and missiology (including the inter-relatedness of the 5 Facets of Mission) for the evangelization of non-Christians.
- Conducts and promotes evangelization through efforts jointly planned and carried out by members of non-Catholic Christian denominations, thereby making this ministry truly ecumenical in scope and practice.
- Utilizes digital methods, when appropriate, to promote the purpose of this position.
- Follows Catholic Church guidelines and teachings in general and, in particular, regarding evangelization, mission, ecumenism, and inter-religious dialogue.
- Participates in a Glenmary missionary orientation program, Glenmary Cluster meetings, Glenmary General Assemblies and Chapters, other Glenmary workshops and meetings as appropriate, and the Eucharistic life of the local Glenmary community where s/he lives.
- Prepares annual budget and a monthly report addressing tasks completed in each of the areas of the job description. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s Degree required. Training in Catholic history, theology, and doctrine preferred. Skilled in evangelization with two or more years of related experience (an equivalence of related volunteer experiences during undergraduate or graduate studies could suffice).
- Must be a fully initiated practicing Catholic who is in full communion with the Catholic Church, who has no impediment limiting full participation in the Church, and who is able and willing to represent both the Catholic Church and Glenmary. S/He must be respectful of other Christian denominations and willing to learn from them. S/He must feel called to evangelize, thereby facilitating the process of deeper participating in the life of the Catholic faith of those otherwise unchurched or unaffiliated.
- Fluency in Spanish is helpful for this position.
