An Introduction to Glenstone Museum
Founded with the mission to seamlessly integrate art, architecture, and landscape, Glenstone is an art museum located on over 300 acres of rolling hills and unspoiled woodland in Potomac, Maryland. The museum, opened in 2006 and expanded in 2018, offers nearly 60,000 square feet of exhibition space to showcase its collection of more than 1300 works by 200 contemporary artists. With its expansion, Glenstone now has the ability to welcome 100,000 visitors each year, and admission is always free.
Position Overview
Reporting to the Director of Facilities, the Housekeeping Manager is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the department to achieve the highest standards of cleanliness. Responsible for staffing, scheduling, training, and development of associates within the department.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership to the Housekeeping department consisting of 1 direct reports and an overall team of 10 associates.
- Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and manage associates who demonstrate strong functional expertise, creativity, and skills to exceed visitor expectations and business needs of the organization.
- Create and nurture an environment that emphasizes teamwork, motivation, empowerment, and a passion for service.
- Establish and maintain open, collaborative relationships with associates.
- Ensure work carried out by staff members is done safely, accurately, and to the highest professional standards.
- Utilize the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to create a detailed scheduled cleaning program, assign work, track progress, and ensure completion of work based on priority levels.
- Perform routine inspections of all buildings and take action to correct defective work.
- Provide regular and ongoing performance feedback and complete annual performance evaluations for all associates within the department.
- Ensure regular, on-going communication to the team and provide a clear and concise message of departmental status, goals, and needed support.
- Propose and manage the Housekeeping budget. Review financial reports, and statements against planned budget and create forecasts.
- Order, purchase and maintain housekeeping supplies and inventory.
- Embrace sustainability and environmental stewardship; including recycling, composting, green cleaning, etc.
- Maintain a positive and professional attitude towards all work, including additional assigned duties.
- Adapt to frequent requests and changing priorities.
- Ability to train and perform the responsibilities of each direct report, as necessary.

Desired Attributes & Characteristics
The ideal candidate will have at least five years of experience successfully managing multiple teams and developing processes and policies for effective department structure and operations. They should be comfortable celebrating successful decisions and be able to learn and recover quickly from disappointments. The candidate must work well independently but also thrive as a member of a high-performing team while working in a fast-paced, frequently changing environment. Attention to detail and multitasking abilities will be critical in order to support the operational needs of a world-class museum.
Required Qualifications
- COVID-19 vaccination and up to date on all boosters.
- Strong cultural competence, interpersonal communication, planning, and organizational skills.
- Minimum of five years' experience of managing a department of a hospitality, cultural, resort, high- end commercial, or educational property.
- Expertise in using housekeeping equipment, tools, cleaning agents, and preservation measures for building finishes.
- Demonstrated ability to use appropriate independent judgment and discretion.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to provide information by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.
- Ability to multi-task between ongoing projects while meeting deadlines.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to establish priorities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat.
- Available to work evenings and weekends.
- Reliable transportation to Potomac, MD and valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Minimum of ten years' experience in a hospitality, cultural, resort, high- end commercial, or educational facility.
- Experience working at a nonprofit organization.
- Experience working around artwork and delicate finishes including stone, terrazzo, wood, and stainless steel.
- Bi-lingual.
- Analytical skills to review data from a variety of sources to identify trends, measure against benchmarks, and prepare reports.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat. Including the use of formulas, tables, and charts.
