What are the responsibilities and job description for the INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT (2 regular educations positions) position at Graham County Schools?
Reports to: Teacher then Principal/Designee
Job Goals: Provides support to the teacher in the instruction of students. Performs work, including but not limited to working in classrooms with teachers; preparing instructional materials and employing them with student groups; conducting clerical tasks; executing student behavioral management; and providing health maintenance services.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High School through graduate degree
2. Associates Degree or 48 semester hours of higher education is required for All Title I funded Schools
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Works in classrooms with teacher. Assists teachers by instructing groups of seven or less students performing below grade level in reading; conducts group activities in accord with lesson plans approved by the teacher; makes presentations; focuses on areas where students need help; develops students' comprehension skills; reinforces basic and higher reading skills; corrects students' work; guides student attention to material to be learned; maintains group discipline; out briefs with the teacher daily; and follows regulations concerning paperwork.
2. Prepares instructional materials and employs them with student groups. Acquires materials appropriate for use with specific student groups; plans material use to supplement lesson plans; develops lesson plans in conjunction with teacher; and determines the manner in which lesson plans and supplemental materials will be employed in classrooms.
3. Conducts clerical tasks. The characteristics of clerical support conducted, is to be defined for a particular teaching assistant position at a specific school.
4. Executes student behavioral management. The characteristics of student behavioral management execution, is to be defined for a particular teaching assistant position at a specific school.
5. Provides health management services. The characteristics of health management services to be provided, is to be defined for a particular teaching assistant at a specific school.

7. Work includes the execution of specific rules, regulations, or procedures
8. Works under the limited supervision of the teacher and/or principal
9. Incumbent uses judgment in locating and selecting the most appropriate guidelines, references, and procedures
10. Problems solved include determining what needs to be done from various choices requiring the employee to recognize the existence of and differences among a few easily recognizable situations
11. Contacts are made with students, school staff, and parents to relay/obtain factual information within and outside the organization
12. Incumbent joins with the assigned teacher to form a team dedicated to accomplishing the goals that the team identifies for achievement. The teacher serves as the team captain.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
1. Knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children
2. Knowledge of the core subjects at the grade level to which employment assignment is made
3. Knowledge of established laws, rules and regulations of Graham County Public School System and Title I program, if applicable
4. Knowledge of expected behavior of children; that is, basic characteristics of ages and stages
5. Crafts skills to assist students in shop class and with activities; assemble materials and to put up bulletin board displays
6. Coordinating skills to schedule lesson plans, organize materials for use with lesson plans, organize and maintain student records, develop schedules for remediation, organize physical fitness records; and track number of students assigned to I.S.S. throughout the year
7. Administrative skills to discipline students based on school policies
8. Analytical skills to assist teacher in student evaluations
9. Communication skills to assist students in classrooms
10. Leadership skills to motivate students toward positive behavior and to help them set realistic goals
11. Planning skills to implement instructional presentation of lesson plans
12. Manual skills for general housekeeping in classroom
13. Planning skills to plan daily activities with teacher
14. Mathematical skills to assist students with assignments
15. Software/word processing skills to assist students in computer lab and with classroom computer programs
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 Months
