JOB SUMMARY:
This position serves the hospital patient population by providing constant overview of patient care area and monitoring of activity throughout the unit. Customer service, patient family support, and safety are primary responsibilities of this position. This position also includes clerical functions and specific patient care duties to facilitate efficient and comprehensive services. The House Supervisor/Nurse Director may re-assign to other units based on changes of volumes and acuity.
JOB DUTIES:
Customer Service:
1. Keeps patient safety the focus while monitoring activity throughout the unit and at the nursing station.
2. Answers and directs all phone calls in an efficient and courteous manner. Answers patients' call lights promptly and communicates/completes needed patient intervention.
3. Maintains confidentiality of all pertinent information to ensure patient, visitor and employee rights are protected.
4. Handles all organizational information in a manner that ensures strict confidentiality is maintained at all times.
Patient Safety:
1. Responds promptly to all patient safety alarms, i.e. Bed and chair alarms, Wander Guard and door alarms.
2. Applies monitors and reports to the RN the effectiveness of any safety device and/or mobility alarm.
3. Observes and monitors patients as they independently ambulate throughout the unit.
4. Participates with hourly rounds and patient safety checks.
5. Monitors patients identified as at risk for elopement or falls.
6. Monitors & facilitates admission of patients, visitors, & employees to WHBC.
7. Has a strong understanding and working knowledge of Code processes throughout the organization with emphasis on Code Green and Code Pink.
Clerical:
1. Places identification on patients upon admission.
2. Maintains and orders inpatient unit supplies/medical and stock items.
3. Retrieves computerized patient data as needed.
4. Faxes hospital census to EHR for level reviews.
5. Assembles and disassembles patient charts in a timely fashion to facilitate patient flow.
6. During Excellian downtime, accurately and promptly completes necessary paperwork to ensure tests, consults and treatments are ordered.
7. Assists with completion of the birth certificate and facility worksheet information on WHBC.
8. Operates paging system in accordance with established organizational procedures.
9. Completes Release of Information (ROI) process; faxes patient chart information as needed.
10. Maintains a clean and uncluttered workstation.
11. Ensures that there is an appropriate supply of all forms and resources utilized within the department.
12. Submits MRO's for needed repairs throughout the department.
13. Reboots all computer in common areas at the start of each shift.
Patient Care Duties:
1. Assists in the delivery of patient care as directed, including but not limited to: reporting significant events and actions promptly to the RN, assisting in direct patient care with ADLs, and patient room and ward order.
2. Performs and demonstrates competency for all CNA responsibilities for patient care.
3. Care is delivered with adherence to the policies and procedures of Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital
General:
1. Demonstrates knowledge of and compliance with hospital safety, disaster and emergency procedures.
2. Cleans and disinfects equipment as needed and assists in keeping unit clean and organized.
3. Initiates the cleaning of patient care areas upon discharge and prepares the room for new admission by disinfecting, changing of linen, restocking room supplies, removing garbage and readying equipment.
4. Assists in the set up and tear down of delivery tables.
5. Assists in room clean up after delivery.
6. Gathers instruments used in delivery and places them to soak in the dirty utility room.
7. Attends required in-services and staff meetings.
8. Understands and adheres to departmental policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Nursing Assistant certification and current listing on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry.
2. BLS Certification or ability to obtain within two months of hire and maintains certification.
3. Minimum of 1 year experience as a nursing assistant or relevant medical education/experience within the past 5 years preferred.
4. Demonstrates basic knowledge of medical terminology and successfully completes the medical terminology test.
5. Experience in an ambulatory or inpatient health care setting with ability to multi-task and manage multiple patient/family/nursing/physician priorities within short time frames preferred.
