Position Overview
This is an exempt position performing water quality and biological analysis for the Ecosystems and Watershed Management Department of the Grand River Dam Authority as assigned by the Laboratory Manager.
Essential job functions include, but are not limited to:
- Works both independently and with teams to solve complex scientific problems.
- Design, develop, and complete research on the ecological function, hydrology, and water quality of the Oklahoma Scenic Rivers and associated GRDA project waters.
- Performs water sampling and analysis of the Oklahoma Scenic Rivers and other duties associated with watershed management.
- Monitors conservation easements established by GRDA for compliance.
- Purchases materials, equipment and miscellaneous items associated with testing of the rivers.
- Provides technical expertise on aquatic ecology, water quality and departmental representation to internal and external customers as assigned.
- Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs field and laboratory equipment.
- Authors and/or Co-Authors reports, presentations, and manuscripts
- Represents GRDA at local, regional, and national scientific organizational meetings and conferences concerning water quality and aquatic ecology.
- Provide outreach to Universities, schools and local groups, Primarily Northeastern State University.
- After-hours work may occasionally be required for meetings and special projects.
Skills, Knowledge, Qualities:
- Functional competency with personal computers; preference to experience with Microsoft Office and R statistical programming.
- Must be capable of methodical research and analysis of environmental and biological data.
- Must possess and demonstrate excellent writing and composition though previous reports or manuscripts.
- Must be comfortable giving technical and non-technical presentations to audiences of varying technical and educational backgrounds.
- Must be comfortable working outside in sometimes difficult conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.)
- Has knowledge and skill with various and common measures of water quality, macroinvertebrates, stream fishes, hydrology, environmental DNA, and sample collection and analysis methods.
Education, Training, Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, environmental science or related field with coursework in limnology, aquatic ecology, genetics, and chemistry. Preferred: Masters or PhD in biological or environmental sciences preferred with a special emphasis in aquatic ecology, limnology or environmental sciences.
- 5 years working experience in related field.
Certificates, Registrations, Licenses:
- Valid Oklahoma driver’s license, or the ability to convert within 30 days for those with an out of state driver’s license that are an Oklahoma resident.
Physical/Mental Requirements & Working Conditions:
- Must be able to walk, climb stairs, bend, and swim. Must not have a fear of heights or flying in helicopters.
- Must be able to traverse and navigate rough terrain, rivers, streams and be comfortable working in semi-remote areas with poor or no cellular service.
- Must be able to lift, move, and carry weights of up to 50 lb on an irregular basis.
- Must possess mental, visual, and auditory acuity for attention to visual and auditory detail. Manual dexterity is required for operation of laboratory equipment, small tools, and the repair or small devices.
- Work is usually performed in an office environment with laboratory and outdoor excursions for the collection and analysis of data.
Other information:
- Position is located at the GRDA-NSU Scenic Rivers and Watershed Research Laboratory in Tahlequah, OK. Specific work site locations exist throughout the northeastern quarter of Oklahoma and/or other locations, as assigned.
