What are the responsibilities and job description for the Health & Safety Specialist position at GRDA?
The Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for identifying occupational hazards and developing and implementing measures to remove or mitigate the hazards to protect the health and safety of the employees, contractors, and visitors. Heavy focus on Fire System inspection and maintenance. In addition, this position must be able to develop Occupational Noise and Air Surveys.
Essential Duties:
Fire Alarm/Suppression Systems. Serve as the Lead Fire protection liaison having responsibility for fire alarm and fire suppression systems. Respond to fire alarms. Tests and maintains fire alarms and suppression equipment. Review and provide guidance to GRDA Leadership on proposed building occupancy changes and construction projects. Serve as the coordinator for relevant contractors for installation upgrading of panel / hardware / software.
Emergency Preparedness/Response. Prepare emergency action plans to facilitate the actions of employees during an emergency. Conduct drills and training to ensure that employees are prepared to respond to an emergency. Work with the Environmental Department during emergency responses to prevent or mitigate the release of pollutants. Provide support during disaster response events.
Property Insurance. Work with GRDA leadership to develop recommendations or corrective measures as needed from insurance providers.
Industrial Hygienist. Identify hazards in the workplace. Develop and implement measures to remove or mitigate the potential dangers associated with the occupational hazards. Tests and maintains industrial hygiene equipment, confined space monitors, and other detection and sampling equipment. Must be able to conduct Occupational noise sampling and develop mitigation plans. Must have knowledge of current Air Sampling techniques to facilitate development of Respiratory protection plan. Facilitate Development of Asbestos Abatement / awareness program. Review OSHA standards, industry trade journals, and other guiding documents.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety & Health science, industrial hygiene, or a related field of study.
Minimum of 4 years related experience required
CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) desired but not required with applicable experience developing noise and air surveys.
AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) desired or ability to obtain
Knowledge of safety and health hazards.
Knowledge of chemicals and particulates present in the workplace.
Knowledge of OSHA standards.
Ability to analyze and solve problems.
Ability to identify and anticipate occupation health and safety risks.
Ability to collect and analyze samples to identify levels of pollution at a workplace.
Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
Must be able to work in all-weather environments frequently on elevated uneven walking and working surfaces, and have the ability climb stairs & ladders while wearing all required personal protection equipment.
