The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority Police Department provides a safe and orderly environment within the transit system while promoting the confidence of the riding public, enhancing the use of the system, and protecting from crime and terrorism. Transit Police work directly with regional partners to respond to and recover from natural and man-made disasters.

About us: The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority Police Department is one of the largest law enforcement agencies in Cuyahoga County and one of the largest in the state of Ohio. We cover approximately 458 square miles and 59 municipalities throughout the county. The department is comprised of multiple divisions which include but are not limited to the Detective Bureau, Traffic unit, Canine & Homeland Security


Detailed Description
Duties: Patrol assigned areas with the purpose to prevent disorder, criminal activity, and terrorism. Protects RTA passengers and employees within the RTA designated area and municipal area of concurrent jurisdiction. Maintains peace and order on the rail, buses, stations, platforms, and any other property of RTA or areas of concurrent jurisdiction. Prepares reports and maintains associated responsibilities concerning reported information. Performs patrol duties specific to the assignment (e.g., bus, radio patrol car, plainclothes, train and station, derailment, etc.).
Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements: Applicant must have a high school diploma or its GED equivalent. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment and must have a valid Ohio Driver's License. Applicants must not have more than two (2) points on their driver’s license in the past three (3) years or any convictions for which time could have been served. Applicants must be able to obtain passing scores on a content-valid written test battery, physical abilities test, and oral communication exercise. Applicants must achieve a satisfactory evaluation on a psychological assessment, medical examination (including drug and alcohol screening) and must meet the criteria established for a background check. Applicant must attain qualifications through training leading to certifications to use systems such as Cuyahoga Regional Information System (CRIS), the Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS), and such certifications that might be required by government regulatory agencies such as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Ohio Department of Transportation. Successful candidates must display sound judgment and be able to interact with the general public in a variety of situations, display initiative, discern the emotional state of others, and make an appropriate and thoughtful response.

The Greater Cleveland Transit Authority invites qualified applicants to apply for a lateral transfer position of Police Officer.

Applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Be a U.S. or naturalized citizen, or have legally declared your intention to become a U.S. citizen.
  • Be 21 years of age at the time of application and appointment.
  • Have a minimum of one (1) consecutive and current year of full-time law enforcement experience in any Police Department established pursuant to Ohio law.
  • Be a high school graduate or hold a G.E.D. certificate.
  • Hold a current law enforcement OPOTA certificate.
  • Possess a valid Ohio driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Pass assessments including interviews, a Background Check, Psychological Exam, and a Medical Exam.

Environmental Conditions: This person will have frequent exposure to inclement weather; possible exposure to hazardous materials and/or infectious blood or other infectious materials; may be exposed to offensive smells, dust, dirt, water, vibrations, and loud continuous noises must be willing to perform all duties described in this job description under adverse weather conditions, including extreme heat or cold and inclement weather.


Physical Demands: This person will have the possibility of bodily attacks while making an arrest; severe bodily harm while dealing with felons. This person must possess the physical strength and stamina to chase and subdue fleeing persons; to arrest them if necessary and to bring them into custody. This person must have the physical strength and stamina to rescue victims; the visual acuity to read and review written correspondence, reports, statistical and technical information, maps, identify suspects, detect danger, read licenses and tags, etc; the hearing acuity to understand conversation in quiet and noisy environments, communicate clearly and distinctly by telephone and in person, understand radio transmissions. This Person must be able to communicate effectively to transmit information via the radio, talk to victims, suspects, etc. This person must be able to meet established physical and medical requirements including good physical strength and agility; weight must be in proportion to height; must have skill in foot/hand/eye coordination and a high degree of concentration to operate a vehicle, weapon, and other equipment required to fulfill essential job duties; must have the strength to pull, lift, or push 50-pound objects frequently and up to 100 pounds on an infrequent basis. This person must have the flexibility to bend, twist, reach, and the mobility to climb crawl, walk; and the stamina to exert oneself throughout the day in all weather conditions.


Mental Demands: Reading, watching, studying, observing, focused listening, and evaluating. Ability to give, receive and analyze information and prepare written materials. Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interpret policy, procedures. Ability to remember names, faces, and details of incidents. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to stressful situations, which may cause the employee to experience feelings of anxiety and/or depression. Must maintain emotional control when under stress. Must be able to work rotating shifts, extended hours, and emergency call-outs. May be required to attend local or out-of-town conferences, seminars, etc. Must be mentally and physically prepared for unforeseen emergencies at all times.


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The performance of these duties may be required at any time of the day or night, any day and night of the week. The position is a bargaining unit position. This position is also safety sensitive and subject to random drug testing.
