Position Summary:
The HSSE Specialist assists in the ongoing development and enhancement of the facility’s Health and Safety program. This involves providing technical support, training, and the creation and implementation of health and safety programs for all employees and visitors. You will work closely with managers, supervisors, and individual employees to promote health and safety programs and issues in the facility, as well as assist in the development of safer, healthier, and more efficient ways of working.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide support to hourly and salaried staff by having a visible presence on the production floor. Foster good staff relationships to gain commitment from all employees.
  • Develop and deliver safety training to all newly hired employees. 
  • Conduct job safety analyses (JSA), safe work procedures (SWP), and physical demands descriptions (PDD).
  • Provide support to and follow-up with the supervisors regarding incident investigation reports; specifically, identifying root causes and following up on outstanding or ineffective corrective actions.
  • Monitor departmental safety meeting.
  • Seek continuous improvement to Health and Safety programs by assisting in monthly department safety inspections, periodic and annual audits, and the implementation of subsequent action plans.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with OSHA, EPA, MassDEP, Town of Montague, and Corporate requirements.
  • Assess training requirements for management, supervision, and Health and Safety Committee members, as well as coordinate appropriate training sessions.
  • Coordinate and conduct regular training sessions for management, supervisors, and employees on Health and Safety practices, legislation, and industry changes using Alchemy.
  • Perform administrative duties such as data entry, producing reports and statistical information and filing.
  • Manage work injury claims and filing timely accident reports.
  • Assist with the rehabilitation of employees after incidents or injuries and ensure return-to-work placements are conducted productively, consistently within restrictions, and in a cost-effective manner.
  • Work closely with Regional HSSE Manager on any other initiatives.
 

Qualifications / Education/ Experience/ Skills:
  • 1-2 years of experience in a Health and Safety role in a manufacturing facility.
  • Certificate or diploma program in Occupational Health and Safety, or College diploma or university degree in any discipline and equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and experience in hazard recognition, assessment, and control.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Capable of working and interacting with all levels within an organization.
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Ability to seek out and apply best practices as solutions to correct deficiencies.
  • Experience handling confidential information.  
  • Considerable tact and discretion required in dealing with employees, managers, and external enforcement authorities on Occupational Health and Safety issues.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suites and database management, SAP experience a plus.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, and feel; climb and balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; taste and smell.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, and extreme cold.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.  The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
