General Summary

This position serves the lending needs of the Credit Union's field of membership including loan origination, underwriting and processing of a variety of consumer loans according to established Credit Union policies, procedures, and legal and regulatory guidelines. This critical function includes providing information on credit union products and services to members, guiding members through the loan process, and counseling members to help ensure their financial well-being.

This position requires National Mortgage Licensing System and Registry (NMLS) registration under the SAFE Act of 2008.


Essential Functions

The essential functions of this position may include, but are not limited to:

  • Interview and effectively tutor applicants on available loan products and recommend programs and solutions that best meet the member's needs.
  • Assist members in the loan application process and provide guidance to help improve their financial well-being.
  • Obtain all information and documentation required for timely loan underwriting and processing including credit reports, financial information and collateral details; Identify additional loan opportunities and clarify areas of concern, such as delinquent credit histories, judgments, name discrepancies, etc.
  • Evaluate and verify loan applications and credit criteria; Analyze current financial position of members to determine the degree of risk involved in extending credit or lending money where applicable.
  • Render sound consumer loan credit decisions within limits of authority based on applicable regulations and credit union lending policies and guidelines; Approve, condition, deny, or submit for higher approval.
  • Communicate credit decision to applicant; explain reasons for denial in a professional and courteous manner; Counsel applicants and request additional information to provide recommendations or alternative options.
  • Prepare and verify applicable loan documents, including notes and security agreements, have been accurately completed; Coordinate, prepare and conduct loan closing.
  • Act as licensed Mortgage Loan Officer (MLO) to discuss home loan products, perform application interview, process and fund all types of real estate loans offered by the credit union.
  • Proactively manage application pipeline to ensure highest possible closing percentage; Demonstrate progress toward loan production and cross sell goals set by management.
  • Proactively offer and counsel members on additional products and services to complement member's immediate product need such as credit life protection, credit disability protection, mechanical breakdown, and GAP to members; Assist members in completing necessary enrollment forms.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with management and other loan officers to help ensure continuity in consumer loan operations, smooth and effective workflow, swift conflict resolution and timely resolution of consumer loan application issues.
  • Provide professional, courteous, responsive and knowledgeable member service while maintaining member confidentiality at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to contribute to departmental efficiency and work cooperatively with other departments to support each other in serving GCU members.

The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications required of the position:


Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent; Associates degree in business, finance or accounting preferred
  • Minimum (2) years loan underwriting and/or processing experience in a bank or financial institution
  • Minimum (2) years direct experience with loan origination systems

Knowledge

  • Must be fluent in English; Bilingual preferred
  • Working knowledge of consumer lending and underwriting practices and installment loan documentation
  • Knowledge of home equity lending and SAFE Act regulations is a plus
  • Intermediate mathematical skills including ratios, percentages, and interest rates
  • Thorough acquired knowledge of laws and regulations governing credit union operations as applicable to position
  • Knowledge of and adherence to proper telephone and email etiquette

  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving, and reasoning skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office and internet navigation

  • Ability to work a minimum of forty (40) hours per week and overtime, as needed
