Head of US Medical Affairs (USMA) Communications and Employee Engagement

Job Description

As Head of US Medical Affairs (USMA) Communications and Employee Engagement, you will be responsible for delivering communications for the US Medical Affairs organization. The selected candidate will be responsible for developing and driving the execution of the Medical Affairs Communications strategy and assisting with key thought leadership engagements in the US. The role involves leading, planning, designing, and maintaining practices and programs that enhance the reputation of GSK’s Medical Affairs function. The role will also include interaction with thought leaders, industry associations, providers, and employees.  The selected individual will report to the head of US Medical Affairs, have a dotted reporting line to the VP of US Commercial Communications and sit on both the US Medical Affairs and US Commercial Communications Leadership teams. 

 

 

Key responsibilities: 

  • Establish a distinct communications strategy for the US Medical Affairs organization aligned to Global and US communications strategies.
  • Develop an exceptional medical affairs communications plan to support the objectives and strategies of US Medical affairs and strongly position the leadership. 
  • Working in close collaboration with key stakeholders, including medical, legal and compliance, create key messages and presentations for medical leaders to support communications to internal and external audiences. 
  • Develop and execute a US Medical Affairs employee engagement plan to build culture, foster connections, and drive employee engagement and dialogue.
  • Work closely with US and Global Communications and Government Affairs colleagues (eg, media relations, digital communications, product, and pipeline communicators) to support the execution of communications plans for significant medical congresses and other key medical milestones. 
  • Collaborate with Global colleagues on key initiatives that have an impact across the company.
  • Lead development and execution of communications strategy for Medical Affairs and content for company platforms and the internal digital and site-based channels used to engage employees, while staying up to date on innovative platforms and approaches.  
  • Lead Workplace engagement strategy for US Medical Affairs leadership team. 
  • Oversee management of information and news flow across US Medical Affairs to maximize impact of internal communications.
  • Deliver internal communications to support internal events, business milestones, and corporate initiatives, including the local pull through of priority global campaigns.
  • Collaborate across GSK US Commercial Communications team to ensure alignment and awareness of key programs.
  • Support the US Country Medical Director and Executive Assistant to the CMD with calendars/scheduling and briefings in advance of and during key engagements.
  • Contribute to a range of other internal projects, including collaboration with internal stakeholders and functional teams to engage employees.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • 10-15years of relevant internal and external communications experience, including crisis and issues communication, with specific experience in pharmaceuticals. 

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Deep understanding and medical/scientific knowledge of medicines and vaccines. 
  • A proven communications leader with a history of success inspiring high-performance teams and changing cultures.
  • Master’s degree.
  • Leadership experience and confidence providing strategic counsel to senior executives (SVP and above).
  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment and be able to deal with ambiguity and manage sensitive situations.
  • Ability to simplify complex scientific and medical information into understandable language. 
  • Impeccable writing and analytical skills 
  • Demonstrated expertise in the following areas:
  • Developing strategic communications plans with demonstrated results
  • Crafting senior leader communications (in the senior leader’s voice)
