Summary of Position
The Billing Specialist is responsible for billing customer contracts and jobs. They are cross-trained on all department functions and assist others when necessary. This position is expected to suggest alternative plans or solutions to operational problems and must be able to make independent decisions and deal with confidential information. The Billing Specialist is also responsible for assisting the Medical Billing Manager with duties required for an efficient operation of the Department.
Essential Functions
- Reviews monthly billing audits for accuracy of billing codes and pricing. Meets monthly billing deadlines
- Physical presence in the office to accomplish these tasks, meet and work with others as required
- Reviews, audits and tracks customer movement within Agencies and Managed Care Organizations for reimbursement purposes
- Maintains knowledge of federal, state and local billing regulations
- Informs management and compliance department of discrepancies
- Works directly with the Managed Care Organizations, Agencies and customers to answer all billing questions in order to get paid
- Processes “release of information requests” consistent with HIPAA requirements and has an understanding of the regulations and guidelines
- Answers and responds to multiple phone lines providing appropriate information and/or directs calls to appropriate staff
- Able to prioritize workload effectively
- Attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills required
- Reviewing and appealing unpaid and denied claims
- Managing the department’s Accounts Receivable report
- Manipulate SQL reports using Excel
- Resolve client billing issues, accounts receivable delinquency
- Escalate account delinquency issues to leadership for resolution
- Making outbound collection calls in a professional manner, while maintaining or improving customer relationship
- Administrative duties
Experience Required
- Demonstrates excellent customer service skills
- Attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills required
- Minimal typing skills of 35 words per minute
- Strong computer skills with knowledge in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook
- Must possess strong clerical skills:10-key, computer, telephone, copier
- Must have strong written and oral communication skills
- Understanding of HIPAA regulations and guidelines
Education Required
- Associate degree preferred
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
