Become a critical member of the National Weather Service (NWS) in its mission to protect American lives and safeguard the nation’s economy. As a member of the NCEP Central Operations (NCO) Operations team, you will directly support the country’s most important weather systems. GuideHouse Digital is looking to hire a Principal Linux Engineer to be an integral part of the day-to-day operations of a large data center at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). This position supports 24x7 mission-critical systems hosted on physical and virtual servers in an active clustering environment located in College Park, MD and Boulder, CO.
The ideal candidate will have worked in large enterprise/multi-site type environments, be in line with industry best practices, think outside the box, be an amazing problem solver, and be able to make recommendations to improve overall system performance.
What You Will Do :
-
Serve as the advanced knowledge expert for all Linux environments.
-
Collaborate with multiple teams to design, develop, test, implement, and support technical solutions in a full-stack development tools and technologies environment.
-
Work with developers, scientists and folks of diverse backgrounds to better understand business processes and requirements.
-
Provide support, oversight and coaching to complex tickets and change request implementation steps.
-
Advocate proper use of federal government security policies (compliance, hardening, vulnerability mgmt).
-
Proactively ensure the highest levels of systems and infrastructure availability.
-
Assess, review and enhance current operational processes (backups, patching, configuration management, etc.)
-
Attend change, problem management, AAR and other review boards as required.
-
Monitor incident trends and coordinate process improvement and proactive resolution processes.
-
Deliver enhanced ways to monitor system health and configurations in order to ensure system health and functionality as well as remediate problems/issues in a timely manner.

Develop, implement, and coach processes and SOP’s for O&M and incident response.

Present to executive management incident debriefs, root cause analysis reports, design and automation improvements.

Must be familiar with source and artifact control, configuration and knowledge management.

Apply ITIL/ITSM principles to support day-to-day enterprise operations.

Be a customer advocate by consistently meeting, exceeding expectations and incorporating customer service into all aspects of work.
What You Will Need :
-
BA/BS Degree and at least 6-8 years of experience. In lieu of a degree, 4 additional years of demonstrated experience will be required.(10-12 years of experience without degree)
-
6-8 full-time years of progressive operations experience into an enterprise setting, including demonstrated O&M experience (advanced troubleshooting, patching, hardening, etc.).

6 full-time years of progressive Enterprise Linux expertise leading to RHEL8 required with demonstrated experience using tools like Satellite and IDM.

Minimum of Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) or Red Hat Certified Administrator (RHCA) - or able to obtain it within 90 days.

Extensive (5 years) infrastructure and Linux/Unix based application support experience.
-
High proficiency (5 years) of Ansible playbooks and scripts written in Perl, Python and various shells.

3 years of VMware experience.
-
Ability to perform rotational on-call support in a 24x7x365 operational environment.

Ability to manage multiple competing priorities effectively.
-
Excellent oral and written communications skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills to deal with multiple contractors and government organizations.

U.S. Citizen or Green card is required for the position.

Candidate must successfully pass a Federal Background Investigation.

The annual salary range for this position is $93,800.00-$140,700.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
