Purpose:
This position will engage and provide direct support to individuals experiencing long-term homelessness who have been assessed within a Coordinated Entry system in the metro area. The Navigator will work to engage individuals in a variety of settings including libraries and shelters. This position helps individuals: get connected to medical and mental health care; work through barriers preventing people from finding and keeping housing; apply for economic assistance, medical assistance, and social security as needed; and find appropriate legal and employment resources. This work depends heavily on partnership and collaboration with social service and housing providers in the community. Guild Navigators walk every step of the way with clients on their journey from homelessness to housed.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Social service and community resources.
- Housing markets in service area and barriers to accessing housing
- The needs of people with mental illness.
- The needs of people who have histories of homelessness and available resources
Skills in:
- Written and oral communication, including facilitating meetings and documentation
- Human relations skills including the understanding of and respect for boundaries, values, and personal differences
- Group facilitation around housing issues and skills needed for successful tenancy
- Organization and time management including meeting deadlines and prioritizing competing activities
- Exercising judgment, knowing when to use own discretion and when to seek supervision and guidance
Ability to:
- Identify essential factors in situations, creatively problem solve, and actively engage individuals in solutions
- Easily establish rapport with participants who are experiencing homelessness and/or a chemical health issue
- Develop and maintain receptive, open, and approachable lines of communications with clients, social service providers, community providers and county staff
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with others
- Be flexible, think creatively and explore new alternatives
- Take a task from start to finish and follow up with others to ensure the task is complete
- Promote an inclusive, diverse, culturally competent, and respectful work environment.
Desired Education and Experiences:
Required:
- Bachelor degree in social services or related field
- Minimum of one-year working or personal experience related to the homeless population and/or with coordinated entry systems.
Preferred:
- Experience in either a housing related field or social services, working with households with multiple barriers, such as mental illness, substance use, and histories of trauma is preferred
- Qualified as a mental health practitioner/case manager or case manager associate is preferred
Additional Requirements:
- Must be ambulatory and able to negotiate stairways.
- A valid Class D driver’s license is required. A reliable vehicle for use in delivering services as needed. Maintenance by the employee of liability and no-fault insurance coverage, and a satisfactory driving record consistent with agency policy is required.
- Ability to perform CPR and First Aid and respond to emergency situations.
- Must not have received services from Guild Incorporated within the last two years.

Working Conditions:
This position is based at Guild St. Paul Area; however, the majority of work is in the field as services are provided to individuals wherever needed. This position requires transporting individuals in personal vehicle regularly. This position has the potential to come into contact with bodily fluids and/or communicable diseases and/or tobacco smoke.
