Overview
The Longshoreman (General Laborer) is responsible for the loading, unloading, moving or handling of cargo; (container, bulk, breakbulk, shipping containers, oil barrels, gear, or any other materials / cargo) into, in, on, or out of any vessel and/or train in a responsible, safe and efficient manner. The Longshoreman may preform other duties as instructed and/or assigned by the Gang Foreman.
Qualifications
Excellent written & verbal communication skills (Spanish is a plus).
One-year (1) year of experience in customer service.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Must have valid Driver’s License and/or State ID.
Must have an active Transportation Worker identification Credential (TWIC) Card.
Dependable & reliable mode of transportation to and from work.
The ability and willingness to work in a team environment.
Must be willing to travel, as needed to other locations within Texas (Houston & Corpus Christi)
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Work is 100% outdoors.
Candidate will be exposed to all types of weather conditions like heat, rain & cold.
Candidate on some occasions will work in enclosed spaces (warehouse, vessel hatch, etc).
Capable of walking, bending, stooping, and climbing ladders up & down up to 100ft.
Must have fast physical reactions; (jump, move).
Ability to work in a noisy environment.
Responsibilities
Reports to Gang Foreman.
Prior Longshoreman experience preferred.
Works outside on terminal.
Communicates verbally or uses hand signals.
May instruct Yard Hustler Drivers on specific location to line up Yard Hustler for the crane to be able to load or offload the container.
May be required to communicate via handheld radio.
May be required to handle tools and/or lashing materials.
May engage and disengage automatic locks (15-20 lbs.) which are set in between the containers to hold in place during transport and place in gearbox.
May be required to place or remove dunnage including but not limited to under blades, buckets, or other attachments that would rest on transport surface.
Must remain clear of moving tracks and attached equipment.
May use push broom to sweep discarded materials to designated area.
May place ISO fittings.
May be required to hook and unhook lifting gear.
