POSITION SUMMARY:
Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT’s) collect, perform and accurately report all patient, quality control and proficiency laboratory tests for which Gundersen Boscobel Area Hospital and Clinics is licensed. MLT’s are responsible for critical thinking, making decisions about the accuracy and reliability of test results, instrument malfunctions, evaluating quality control results, specimen suitability, blood bank compatibility and prioritizing tests/patients to serve our customer’s needs. The person filling this role must comply with all requirements and standards of applicable regulating agencies.

21. Attends at least 75% (9) of all departmental meetings or reviews tapings/minutes within 1 week unless otherwise excused.
22. May be assigned to function as a group leader to assist in training, providing job assignments to coworkers, and reviewing other laboratorian’s work.
23. Submits facility incident/occurrence reports per facility protocol.
24. Assists in ensuring that the department meets standards necessary for certification by all federal and state regulatory agencies.

29. Proficiently performs capillary, venous and arterial punctures on all patient groups.
30. Draws/collects appropriate specimen(s) for the test(s) ordered.
31. Demonstrates knowledge of test requirements, methodology and completion times.
32. Follows protocol for performing/reviewing/accepting/reporting patient, proficiency and quality control results. Performs and documents any corrective action necessary before reporting patient results. Takes the initiative to investigate problems, find solutions and report back to Director Ancillary Services as needed. Calls Technical Service for instrumentation, when necessary.
33. Demonstrates knowledge of normal value ranges as they relate to the various age groups (newborn, pediatric, adult).
34. Demonstrates knowledge of protocols related to critical value test reporting.
35. Maintains accurate records as required by the department. Dates/initials/signs completed work.
36. Notifies Director Ancillary Services, or designee of discrepant or unexpected results, quality control or equipment failures within expected time frames.
37. Performs proficiency testing in a prompt manner, according to protocols, and hands in appropriately completed/signed paperwork to Director Ancillary Services.
38. Maintenance is performed and documented per established protocols for each laboratory instrument in order to maintain it in a safe and proper working condition.
39. Unscheduled maintenance is documented and communicated to all laboratory staff in an effective manner. Corrective actions, when necessary, are taken promptly and steps taken are documented.
40. Test system calibration and calibration verifications are performed/documented as required by manufacturer and laboratory standards.
41. Possesses ability to prioritize/re-organize workload in response to STAT requests per laboratory protocols.
42. Actively supports the creation, implementation and evaluation of laboratory quality assurance programs.
43. Actively supports daily and weekly chart audits. Additional charges, corrections needed for patient accounts are completed within 5 days, whenever possible. Works with the Business Office to ensure that patient accounts accurately reflect the work performed by the department.
44. Discards outdated supplies/reagents. Demonstrates a cost-conscious attitude in the use and ordering of supplies.
45. Is available to respond within 20 minutes for call when needed or scheduled. Call may be scheduled on weekdays, weeknights, weekends or holidays as necessary.
46. Maintains work areas in a neat, clean, sufficiently stocked, and orderly manner. Assists in cleaning and organizing of the entire department, including storage areas.

WORK RELATIONSHIPS AND SCOPE:
Reports directly to the Director Ancillary Services
MEASURES OF PERFORMANCE:
Performance is measured in the ability to provide thorough, high quality, accurate, reliable, and timely laboratory results; the ability to communicate effectively and develop good working relationships with others; soundness of critical thinking skills and decisions made; ability to maintain the integrity of highly confidential patient information, and the ability to gain the trust and respect of the Director Ancillary Services and other employees.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Graduate of an associate degree accredited MLT program (including internship).
- Must have passed ASCP certification exam or be eligible and
- Must comply with all continuing education requirements necessary to maintain licensure
- Two years previous clinical laboratory experience, including phlebotomy and computer
- Previous experience working with the public is helpful, but not required.
- CPR certification is required.
EQUIPMENT
*Continual use of personal protective equipment when caring for patients.
*Occasional use of PAPR or TB masks (required when entering a room with airborne
isolation).
*Knowledge of operation of all safety equipment including shower, eyewash,
biological fume hood and fire extinguishers is necessary.
*Occasional use of routine office equipment like copier, fax, calculators and paging
system.
*Continual operation of all laboratory analytical equipment.
