Dance Instructor

DESCRIPTION:

The Dance Instructor position reports to the Performing Arts Coordinator and works directly under the supervision of the Supervisor of Community Programs & Events. A Dance Instructor instructs, explains, and demonstrates techniques and methods of dance with musical or rhythmic accompaniment to students of all ages in a variety of dance styles.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Instructors are responsible for teaching a group of approximately 10 students per class
2. Instructors are required to participate in all special performances and programs
3. Prepare a general lesson plan for each class with goals relating to the Studio Dance curriculum
4. Be able to demonstrate techniques being taught, observe and correct dance students as they attempt to do it themselves, and offer suggestions to students on how to improve their dance techniques in a positive learning environment
5. Provide a safe and enjoyable class environment for all participants
6. Attend all required staff trainings and workshops
7. Work cooperatively with other Dance Instructors and the Performing Arts Coordinator to meet department goals
8. Complete and submit all necessary information and forms associated with the Studio Dance program including schedules, contact information, lesson plans, song lyrics/choices, costume choices, sub requests, accident/incident reports in a timely fashion
9. Know and uphold the Gurnee Park District Customer Service Standards (SOFFI)
10. Read, understand and be familiar with the Gurnee Park Districts Personnel Policy Manual and Safety Manual
11. Maintain good working relationships with fellow staff members, other departments, administrative personnel, community members and any other visitors to our facilities or programs
12. Perform all other duties as assigned
13. Additional responsibilities during Recital Session (January-May):
    1. Choreograph dances for recital performances.
    2. Choose appropriate music for both the class and the recital.

14. Recommend appropriate costumes for the age of the students.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Educates public concerning program purpose and philosophy of the Park District
2. Thorough understanding of Park District programming and events.
3. Effective leadership and personal relationships encourages positive community relationships
4. Develops rapport with program participants and parents

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience: Individuals must a minimum of 18 years of age. Must have progressive dance instruction experience in a professional setting.
• Education: High School Diploma required. Formal dance training and education with an emphasis in performance, arts or like field preferred.
• Skills: Formal dance training and expertise in the area of dance they will be instructing. Must be able to work with children/youth/adults.
• Certifications: First Aid/CPR certification or ability to become certified within 6 months of employment.
• Competencies: reliable, friendly, self-motivated, and must have extensive dance knowledge.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Your job may entail bending, kneeling, squatting or sitting when working your shift. Occasionally movement of market supplies will be necessary in which case the maximum weight that you are expected to be able to lift is 25 lbs., but generally it will be less.
