What are the responsibilities and job description for the Dispatcher - Van Division position at H&M Trucking?
Summary: A driver and customer need a point of contact that they can rely on. They need someone who is invested in keeping the driver legal while on the road and at the same time keeping the customer happy. Part of this job is to coordinate and manage the most efficient loads to remain cost effective as a company. The dispatcher also needs to identify and evaluate any special needs for each load. This position is as essential to a trucking operation as any driver. Your goal is to make your customer happy and keep your drivers safe.
The dispatcher position acts as a liaison between drivers, customers and management and effectively dispatching deliveries by performing the duties listed below.
Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Effective planning and coordination of freight for our customers
- Assist in dispatching OTR, regional, and local drivers effectively, efficiently and profitably
- Development of driver routes based on customer pickup and delivery schedules
- Manage requests for production, maintenance and home time
- Continual review of inbound/outbound freight, empty/committed truck statuses and trailer availability to maximize asset utilization.
- Identify, develop and assist in creating and managing line-haul operations
- Allocation of trailers to customers and geographic areas based on Customer and Company needs
- Manage the day-to-day utilization of drop yards and terminals, ensure data integrity is accurate
- Manage communication with Operation and Fleet Managers, Customer Service, Drivers and other office staff to ensure maximum customer and driver satisfaction
- Plan and implement processes as necessary to improve routing and equipment utilization performance.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to provide effective planning to maximize service and financial performance
- Knowledge of national, regional and metropolitan geography and roadways
- Knowledge of DOT regulations including hours of services rules with ability to incorporate rules into daily shipment planning
- Ability to communicate with internal and external customers and business partners in a professional and respectful manner
- Provide detailed instructions to various personnel via email and phone
- Ability to develop relations with fleet managers, drivers, management and internal and external business partners
- Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously
- Proficiency with Microsoft; experience with transportation management system a plus
- Ability to read, write and speak English fluently
Education/Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Previous transportation experience preferred.
