About the role

The Richmond Pilot Plant (RPP) is a key enabler in accelerating our innovation delivery while minimizing disruptions at the manufacturing site and also stretching valuable innovation dollars by minimizing external spend at CROs.

The RPP Lead has a broad remit to lead the entire pilot plant operations, from the management of the GMP warehouse, ensuring that all equipment and the pilot plant remain in GMP status, execution of pilot batches as well as primary packaging. The RPP Leads primary accountability is to ensure that the pilot plant is available for manufacture of GMP and non-GMP batches in support of product development activities, process development, scale up, registration batches, product for clinical studies as well as consumer studies.

The RPP lead also works closely with the Scale Up and Tech Transfer lead in contributing to the pilot plant master plan and development of a capital investment plan to maintain and grow the pilot plant capabilities that will be in line with the expectations of the delivery of the innovation pipeline.

Role Responsibilities

  • Lead all aspects of the Richmond GMP Warehouse, RPP and the Packaging of all products manufactured in RPP. Coordinate with project teams and build schedules that will maximize the utilization of RPP.

  • Collaborate with the Lead Scale Up and Tech Transfer to understand future capabilities and input into the capital investment plan to build those capabilities. Provide leadership and oversight towards the execution of capital projects in the pilot plant.

  • Develop and implement programs to maximize the utilization of the pilot plant and all its assets

  • Work closely with the site quality team to ensure that the pilot plant is always in a state of readiness for any internal audits/external inspections.

  • Ensure the warehouse, pilot plant and packaging area are in a state of readiness ensuring on-time availability of the equipment, the pilot plant facility and personnel to support R&D projects. Ensure that the facility and equipment are qualified and maintained for GMP use

  • Recruit and ensure that the team has the skills, expertise needed to support all operations. Ensure training for self and team are current and covers all training for required operations and EHS.

Other Responsibilities

Business Expertise

The Lead RPP role has 3 main areas of responsibilities (Warehouse, Pilot Plant and Primary Packaging Operations). The lead will need to be a dynamic individual well aware of the intricate details of operations of each of these areas to be able to lead the project going through RPP as well as lead the team reporting to the lead. A detailed knowledge of GMPs as it relates to receiving, testing and release of raw materials, batch records, qualification and maintenance of manufacturing and packaging equipment is essential. A working knowledge of the manufacturing and packaging equipment will help the lead in making the right decision around operations, planning and utilization. Safe operation is absolute key and the individual will need to demonstrate their ability in performing/supporting risk assessments for the equipment as well as operations. A broad understanding of various pharmaceutical process will aid the lead.

Problem Solving

The complexity for this lead will primarily arise to coordinate various aspects of the operations, ensuring proactive planning and timely completion of each operation for smooth execution of the batches in the pilot plant. The lead will also need to deal with multiple and conflicting priorities on a daily basis. The organization and prioritization skills of the lead will be put to test in the role. The lead could also contribute/support project teams in solving process problems when they arise in the pilot plant due to their familiarity with all the pilot plant equipment.

Key skills for this individual to be successful are:

  • Excellent communication to be able to negotiate priorities and effectively interact with scale up and tech transfer engineers and other cross-functional site partners.

  • Excellent organization skills to be able to create plans and schedules which will help communicate and allocate resources and time of the RPP utilization (warehouse, pilot plant and packaging).

  • Proactive planning of validation and equipment readiness activities to effectively support scale up batch manufacturing needs.

  • Command of non-GMP practices as well as GMP requirements to effectively enable the RPP to support feasibility, engineering, scale up and pivotal batch manufacturing.

Nature & Area of Impact

The RPP lead will ultimately touch EVERY innovation launched for North America as well as Global OTC (except where the projects are completely outsourced). Optimal operation and maximizing the utilization of the RPP will allow the organization to stretch the R&D dollars by reducing external spends at CROs.

The lead will work directly with individual project teams and contribute to the development of project timelines. He/She will work to prioritize resources availability as well as scheduling for the pilot plant equipment and work with project teams to maximize pilot plant output and not impact the projects.

The pilot plants scope also includes manufacture of registration stability batches the data from which will go into various submissions globally, the lead will need to ensure that all aspects of the pilot plant are every ready for external inspections.

Interactions / Interpersonal Skills

It is well expected that there will be conflicting priorities for access and use of the pilot plant, the lead will need to work with individual project teams to ensure that their projects are supported while other projects don't get impacted. The fine balance will require negotiation with the project teams and a good business acumen to be able to provide facts and data to the project teams for a bit of forced negotiation on a case-by-case basis. During any PAI inspection of the pilot plant, the lead will be on the front line to support all aspects of the inspection.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS Science Minimum

  • 7 years proven work experience in the pharma/consumer health industry within a GMP lab/pilot plant or manufacturing environment.

  • 3 years demonstrated ability to manage teams in an operations rhythm (i.e. timelines, priorities, schedules, people)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior manufacturing and/or operations role able to manage competing tasks and priorities simultaneously

  • Hands on knowledge of pharmaceutical process unit operations and equipment
