We're looking for a strategic and collaborative Category Leader to join Hallmark and contribute to the company's success at Walmart. Through shopper and consumer understanding, category planning, strategy development, and financial management and forecasting, you will balance Walmart's strategy against Hallmark's strategy and portfolio, while driving mutual sales and brand success with customers.

WHAT YOUR ROLE ENTAILS AND HOW YOU'LL CONTRIBUTE
There are four essential priorities for this role:
  • Shopper & Customer Understanding:
    • In partnership with Insights & Analytics, gather, represent, and activate shopper insights to our product development teams and to the retailer.
    • Identify gaps in shopper understanding for our product category(ies) and commission research plans to close them.
    • Commission shopper-back research for existing programs and tests and leverage it to inform future strategies.
    • Leverage shopper segmentation work and customer strategy to build assortments and to inform product development and eCommerce strategies.
  • Category Planning:
    • Activate and inform category plans for 1-3 years out for in store and online (omni-channel).
    • Collaborate with product and assortment planning partners to optimize category assortment plans and ensure the model line meets the needs of the Walmart customer.
    • Provide clear direction on category role, shopper needs, pricing and margin.
    • You will have the opportunity to partner with merchants on shelf strategies (including featured spaces or promotions) and incremental opportunities that are identified.
    • Identify category opportunities to grow the business through a high level of interaction with sales representatives and retailer(s).
    • Partner with Analytics to assess performance and recommend interventions or iterations when needed which can include input into lifecycle management and disposition plans.
    • Collaborate with partners to facilitate communication and selling requirements to place and execute programs while ensuring all partners are aware of back off dates for timely execution.
  • Strategy Development:
    • Develop recommendations for category definition, roles, strategies, and tactics for both in-store and online.
    • Leverage insights and retailer expertise to commission product, refine assortments and influence lifecycle management that delivers against growth targets.
    • Present product strategies to retailer(s). You will leverage analysis to determine any modifications needed to the current strategies and what needs to adjust for any future strategies.
  • Financial Management & Forecasting:
    • Partner with merchants and assortment planning to establish RSI goals and resources needed to achieve them.
    • Drive ROI and scenario planning with finance for new and incremental programs.
    • Partner with VM on options for staying on budget spend for any non-core programs.
    • Collaborate with Analytics to provide category forecasts for featured programs.
    • Provide input into pricing and markdown strategies for assigned category(ies).
    • Influence program direction with POSR to best manage assets and achieve RSI.

In addition to the outlined priorities, you will have the opportunity to lead, motivate, and inspire a team (two Category Performance Leaders and one Omnichannel Category Manager). You will set objectives and goals for all staff members, and provide regular, ongoing feedback to the team. In addition, you will work with each team member to build job and career development plans, discussing and providing coaching and development opportunities in line with their goals.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
The following is required to be considered for this role:
  • Bachelor's Degree or 4 years of professional work experience
  • 5 years of professional experience in Sales, Marketing, Business or Product Development

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Your resume and application will stand out if you have:
  • 3 years of product category development, merchandise management, or assortment planning experience
  • Proven understanding of retail marketplace and knowledge of key customers
  • Strong financial and business acumen
  • Proven communication, team management and leadership skills
  • Effective partnering and collaboration skills
  • Experience in managing and developing category strategies with a proven ability to lead multiple projects, set priorities and meet aggressive timelines
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook
  • Ability to lead the professional development of direct reports
  • Self-directed, detail & team oriented with highly developed problem solving and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, coupled with strong organizational, planning and interpersonal skills
  • Significant experience in dynamic, fast paced environment

ADDITIONAL DETAILS
  • This position is a hybrid role that must have the flexibility to work on site at Hallmark's headquarters in Kansas City, MO, as needed by the business. Hybrid schedule will be outlined in more detail during the interview phase of the consideration process. Some relocation assistance may be available.
